  4. Understand Phase • The objective is to understand, not just to build an “as-is” model • The model will be a tool and communication device • Concentrate on what actually happens in the process

  5. Confirm scope & boundaries • Start with process architecture diagram, produced in the architect and align phase • Identify the relationships among business processes, technologies, human resources, and business strategy.

  6. Mapping existing process • IGOE’s (input, Guide, Output & Enabler) process modelling, flowchart, IDEF0, ASME • Focus on process flow and the objects being transformed in the process • Start from the outcomes of the process and work backward

  7. Mapping … • Decompose the process into component subprocessess (a maximum of eight) • Matrices of interaction between data and process can be used
