  1. Understanding pixels mega Pixels are tiny, square blocks that are usually too small to be seen, giving the illusion of a detailed picture. mega = 1,000,000 (M) (1 million) kilo = 1,000 (k) (1 thousand) Pentax Optio 7 megapixels £120 All bitmap images are made up of pixels Every time a digital camera takes a photo, it creates a picture made up of many pixels. Most digital cameras can take photos made up of millions of pixels. For this reason they use the term ‘megapixel’ meaning 1 million pixels. For example, the camera above can take photos up to 7 megapixels (7 million pixels). Your monitor can display around 1000 pixels across its width Often, digital cameras are marketed on how many pixels they can make up their photos out of. However, you may not need all those pixels. You could set your camera to take photos at a lower megapixel setting. Even 1 megapixel may be enough for some uses. 1164 x 931 pixels = 1,083,684 pixels = 1 megapixel 2048 x 1536 pixels = 3,145,728 pixels = 3 megapixels Canon EOS 10 megapixels £300
