The Punic Wars • The First Punic War • Cause: • Effect: • The Second Punic War (Pt. 1) • Cause: • Effect: Roman intervention on behalf of Messina in Sicily Carthaginian surrender; build-up of massive army by Hamilcar; hatred of Rome by Hannibal Hannibal’s desire to destroy Rome Massive loss of men & senators for Rome; Hannibal remains in Italy; Roman philosophy of war solidified = caution!

  11. The Punic Wars as a Front • War with the Celts • Northern Italy & Spain • Cause: Misunderstanding of Treaties • Effect: Brutal conquest of Northern Italy & Spain • Rome often slaughtered everyone in ambushes and massacres

  12. The Punic Wars as a Front • War in the East • Remember these guys?? • Macedonians? Seleucids? • Second Macedonian War (201-169 BCE) • Cause: Request for aid by Pergamum & Rhodes • Effect: Freed all Greeks from foreign rule

The Punic Wars as a Front • The Syrian War (192-189 BCE) • Cause: Request from Greeks after Seleucid invasion • Effect: Rome enters Asia for the first time; gives conquered lands in Asia Minor to Pergamum • The Third Macedonian War (171-167 BCE) • Cause: Squabbling between Greece & Macedon • Effect: Division of Macedonia into 4 weak kingdoms

  14. The Punic Wars as a Front • Let’s just take Macedon • Cause: revolt in 149 BCE • Effect: annexation of Macedon • May as well take Greece, too • Cause: Squabbling between city-states  war • Effect: Sacking of Corinth; annexation of Greece in 146 BCE

  15. PHEW! Domination is hard work! • In 133 BCE, Pergamum willed to Rome • So what’s the big deal? • Following the Punic Wars (and all the others) Rome becomes, exclusively, the dominant force in the Mediterranean. • Rome confident, and desirous, of its growing domination in Europe
