  • The Coast Guard Navigation Center promotes safe, secure, and efficient transportation on United States’ waterways by providing:

    • Operational and technical support for electronic navigation systems

    • Quality positioning, navigation and timing signalsMaritimeDGPS (USCG), NDGPS (DOT), LORAN

    • Accurate and timely waterways information services.

Nationwide Single Coverage Goal

  • The Initial Operational Capability (IOC) goal is 99% of the continental United States with single coverage.

  • Currently, only 7 sites are needed to achieve IOC. Advance preparation work has been finished or in progress for the remaining 7 sites.

  • NOAA also uses data from our DGPS sites to continuously

    measure the water vapor in the atmosphere.

  • Greatly improves short term weather forecasts.
