  1. Pottasium HydroxideFormula: KOH By: Ernesto Tovar and Ralph Sulit

  2. Current Uses • Alkaline batteries/fuel cells • Petroleum • Biodiesel • Diagnoses for fungal infections in skin • Production of aluminum • Soap making • Soft drinks • Chocolate and cocoa processing • Softening olives

  3. Process of Production • Boiling solution of potassium carbonate (potash) with calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) • Calcium carbonate precipitates • Potassium hydroxide left in the solution

  4. Why Humans Need this Base to Live in Space Potassium Hydroxide is used to make alkaline fuel cells and alkaline fuel cells are used for space rockets. Without space rockets humans can’t go to space. And with this base we can use it as biofuel and petroleum. Those two substances are great resources of energy that we could use in space.

  5. Why this Base should be Produced in Space • Efficient • A lot of uses • Easy to produce • Bi-products are included: hydrogen and chlorine gas • A source of energy
