MANUFACTURE

  • Printed Circuit Board

    • Choose manufacturer and specifications correctly

      • RoHS (restriction of hazardous substances) compliant solder finish

        • Lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominateddiphenylether

        • Advanced Circuits uses tin copper alloy as solder finish, another common example is Electroless Nickel/Immersion Gold (ENIG)

    • Minimize area of PCB

  • Components

    • RoHScompliant

  • Batteries

    • Device only compliant with Nickel Metal Hydride

      • Environmentally friendly, don’t use toxic chemicals of alternatives (e.g. Cadmium)

NORMAL USE

  • Maximize product lifetime – user awareness

    • Batteries

      • Store in cool, dry, place

      • If not used for months at a time, recharge periodically

      • Charge cycles variable, 400-1000 times, depends on use (don’t overcharge)

  • Energy Consumption

    • NiMH high self discharge rate (1-4% daily)

    • ~500mA at 5V, ~100mA at 3.3V, ~1500mA at 7V (P = 2.5+0.33+10.5= 13.33W)

    • Battery pack 2800mAh capacity

      • Under ideal conditions can run for 1.75hr

  • Batteries

    • Nickel Metal-Hydride (NiMH)

      • Should be recycled in proper repository

      • If recycling unavailable, don’t dispose of 10+ at once (Buchmann)

  • Physical Robot

    • Recycle plastic chassis

    • Rubber wheels (if possible)

  • Electronic Components

    • Electronic recycling center
