  3. The History of the Internet The internet today is a widespread information infrastructure, the initial prototype of what is often called the National or (Global or Galactic) Information Infrastructure. The Internet represents one of the most successful examples of the benefits of sustained investment and commitment to research and development.

  4. The History of the Internet • The First Record description of Networking was written in a series of memos by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in 1962. • In late 1966 Lawrence G. Roberts went to DARPA to develop the computer network concept and quickly put together plans for the “ARPANET”

  5. The History of the Internet • In 1964 Leonard Kleinrock at MIT published the first paper on PACKET SWITCHING in 1964. • This concept was introduced instead of using circuits, which as a major step along the path toward computer networking. • The other concept was to make computers to talk together.

  6. The History of the Internet • To explore this concept, in 1965 Kleinrock along with Thomas Merrill and Lawrence Roberts connected the TX-2 computer in Massachusetts to the Q-32 in California with low speed dial-up telephone line creating the first small wide-area network.

  7. The History of the Internet • Computers were added quickly to the ARPANET . • December 1970 the Network Working Group (NWG) finished the initial ARPNET Host-to-Host protocol, called the Network Control Protocol (NCP) this was completed during the period from 1971-1972.

  8. The History of the Internet In October 1972, Robert E. Kahn introduced the ARPNET at the International Computer Communication Conference . The was also the introduction of the “hot” application , electronic mail (e-mail). This was largest network application for over a decade.

  9. The History of the Internet This was a harbinger of the kind of activity we see on the World-Wide-Web today, namely, the enormous growth of all kinds of people-to-people traffic.
