  1. Research Design

  2. Definition • Thyer A traditional research design is a blueprint or detailed plan for how a research study is to be completed – operationalizing variable so they can be measured, selecting a sample of interest to study, collecting data to be used as a basis for testing of hypothesis, and analyzing the results.

  3. Questions to Answer • What is the study about? • Why is the study being made? • Where will the study be carried out? • What type of data is required? • Where can the required data be found? • What periods of time will the study include? • What will be the sample design?

  4. Contd • What techniques of data collection will be used? • How will the data be analyzed? • In what style the report be prepared?

  5. Concepts - Research Design • Dependent & Independent variable • Extraneous variable • Control • Confounded relationship • Research hypothesis • Experimental and non-experimental hypothesis testing

  6. Contd • Experimental and control groups • Treatments • Experiment • Experimental units

  7. Types of Research Design • Exploratory research – review of literature, experience survey, case study, focus group • Descriptive Research – formulating the objective, method of data collection, selecting the sample, collecting the data, processing the data, reporting the findings • Experimental research design with or without hypothesis testing

  8. Basic Principles of Experimental Designs • Principle of Replication • Principle of Randomization • Principle of local control

  9. Experimental Designs • Before and after without control design • After only with control design • Before and after with control design • Completely randomized design- two group simple randomized design, replication design, randomized block design • Latin square design • Factorial design

  10. Data Collection • Primary • Secondary

  11. Methods for Collecting Primary Data • Observation • Interview • Questionnaire • General form • Question sequence • Type of questions • Schedules • Warranty cards

  12. Contd • Store audits • Consumer panel • Mechanical devices • Projective techniques • Word association • Sentence completion • Story completion • Verbal projections • Pictorial • Depth interviews

  13. Secondary Data • Reliability of data • Suitability of data • Adequacy of data - Case study

  14. A Sample Questionnaire • Age • Occupation • Do you shop? • How often do you shop? • When do you prefer to shop? • Where do you shop normally? • Please tell us about your awareness and number of visits to the following malls

  15. Contd • Please give your views on malls for the following aspects • Malls are convenient • Offer more variety • Hygienic • Value for money • More expensive • Fashionable • Outing

  16. Contd • Specify the spending at mall • Eating • Entertainment • Shopping • What factors should improve at malls? Parking • Would you recommend a specific mall to your friends • Any experience you would like to share
