  2. VORTEX FINDERS (DIP TUBES, IMMERSION TUBES)

  3. VORTEX FINDERS (DIP TUBES, IMMERSION TUBES) Cyclonewithnovortex finder - Steel alloyorceramic Plan view Section of cyclone A cyclone is a device to separate the dust from the air. It doesthisveryeffectively. However a small portion of the air/dustmixescapesinto the exit pipe

  4. VORTEX FINDERS (DIP TUBES, IMMERSION TUBES) THE NORMAL PROCESS IN A CEMENT CYCLONE (VERY SIMPLIFIED) CaCO3 + Q (heat)  CaO + CO2 Cyclonewithnovortex finder - Steel orceramic For the dustwhichescapes : CaO + CO2 CaCO3 + Q (heat) Energy lost + re-circulation and concentration of impurities. Thisleads to build-up.

  5. VORTEX FINDERS (DIP TUBES, IMMERSION TUBES) Cyclonewithvortex finder - Steel alloyorceramic The portion of the air/dustmixwhichescapesinto the exit pipeis reduced

  6. Which type to choose : Upper cyclones(where the temperaturesarebelow 700oC) Thereareusuallyno problems here and youcaneasilyuse a lowcoststeelalloy tube : Therearemanysuppliers Lowercyclones(where the temperaturesareabove 700oC) Steel alloyorceramicvortex finders • Weneed to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages

  7. THE EFFECTS OF ALTERNATIVE FUELS Aggressive chemicals • Certainchemicalsattack the steelalloyvortex finder (chlorine, sulphur, CO) • Otherchemicalsattack the ceramicvortex finder (alkalies). Fluctuatingtemperatures(due to non-homogenousfuels and variable watercontent) • If the normal temperature in the cyclone is 850 - 900oC and severefluctuationsoccurthen there is a bigrisk of overheating the steelalloyvortex finder. • Toomanyfluctuatingtemperaturescancausefailure due to thermalshock of the ceramic vortex finder elements

  8. THE EFFECTS OF ALTERNATIVE FUELS Aggressive chemicals • Certainchemicalscanattack the steelalloyvortex finder (chlorine, sulphur, CO) • Otherchemicalscanattack the ceramicvortex finder (alkalies). Fluctuatingtemperatures(due to non-homogenousfuels and variable watercontent) • If the normal temperature in the cyclone is 850oC and severefluctuationsoccurthen there is a risk of overheating the steelalloyvortex finder. • Toomanyfluctuatingtemperaturescancausefailure due to thermalshock of the CVF Under theseconditions it is verydifficult to estimate the lifetime of the vortex finder (steelalloyorceramic) The answer : Do a trial !!!

  9. VORTEX FINDERS (DIP TUBES, IMMERSION TUBES)

  10. THE STEEL ALLOY VORTEX FINDER If the customer is satisfiedwith the lifetime (2 yearsor more) and therearenoother problems thenhewillprobablycontinuewith the steelvortex finder. If the plant engineers are dissatisfied there can be the following reasons : • Lifetime : corrosion or heat can cause short lifetime • Build-up : causes the pressure drop to increase • Buckling : becomes so distorted the pressure drop increases- reduced efficiency • Abrasion : In some cases abrasion makes holes in the steel plates • Thickness : need to measure the steel thickness every shutdown • Sometimes difficult and time-consuming to remove and install (sometimes 3 – 7 days) • Often blocks the cyclone when pieces fall • Fallen steel segments damage the kiln lining, the cooler or the crusher

  11. VORTEX FINDERS (DIP TUBES, IMMERSION TUBES) XX Group cementplant in Switzerland Photo takenafter 19 months. Damagedbelow rooflevelafter 27 months. Re-installation to beJanuary 2012

  12. THE CERAMIC VORTEX FINDER If the customer is satisfiedwith the lifetime (2 yearsor more) and therearenoother problems thenhewillprobablycontinuewith the ceramicvortex finder. If the plant engineers are dissatisfied there can be the following reasons : • lifetime too short : due to thermal shock • lifetime too short : due to chemical deterioration of the precast elements • Occasionally blocks the cyclone when pieces fall

  13. CERAMIC VORTEX FINDERS About 3 yearsagowe did a fullanalysis of the ceramicvortex finder elements. The analysisrecommendedthatwestop usingSiliconcarbide (SiC) in the precast elements The analysisrecommendedthatwestop usingsteelalloy fibres in the precast elements We did this and the lifetimes have definitelyimproved

  14. CERAMIC VORTEX FINDERS The developmentcontinues …………………

  15. CERAMIC VORTEX FINDERS INSTALLATIONS IN NEW INDUSTRIES : Power plants – CFB boilersAluminaindustry – due to heavy abrasion
