KM3NeT el/opt Cable Junction Box E.G. Anassontzis Ass. Prof. of Physics N. & K. University of Athens on behalf of NESTOR collaboration WP5, Paris, Feb.09

  2. Bereike The scope To splice electro-optical cables (either for repair or extension) To terminate electro-optical cables (in order to connect deep-sea instrumentation) To do the above with any type of electro-optical cables

  3. Baikal Fibres Thixotropic filling compound Copper tube High Density Polyethylene Reinforcement) Steel wires Polypropylene yarn The electro-optical cable • The electro-optical group • The fibres • The metallic tube and conductor • The Plastic sheath Optical Fibres Thixotropic Filing NSW's LA Minisub CA el/opt cable Copper tube Steel wire vault • The Reinforcement and handling group • The reinforcing steel wires (one or more layers) • The external handling layer Copper conductor Polyethylene sheath Steel wires Yarn NSW’s MINISUB R SA cable, switable for depths down to 7000m. ALCATEL has a similar design: the URC2 Single Armoured cable (SA)

  4. Baikal The electro-optical cable splice 1. Preparing and restoring of the two cable ends that we plan to join. This includes the removable of cable layers lengths as required. 2. Splicing the fibres using the required fibre splicer. 3. Restoring the steel tube and protecting the fibre splices within it. 4. Restoring the conductor layer (tape) and the electrical continuity. 5. Restoring the insulation layer. 6. Restoring the steel wire cage. 7. Restoring the external handling layer. Similar procedure if we want to “terminate” the electro-optical cable

  5. Baikal The electro-optical cable splice • Splices produced for specific elopt cables • The “Universal Joint” of the UJ Consortium (to join elopt cables that conform the UJ Consortium specifications • The “home made” elopt splice box The Universal Joint Common Component (picture of UJ Consortium)  The Km3NeT-NESTOR-UoA elopt CJB  The most complicating requirements: The elopt cable works under: High pressure High voltage The most crucial repair step: Restoring the insulation layer

  6. Baikal The Km3Net-NESTOR-UoA elopt CBJ (electro-optical cable junction box) B T T’ • Major requirements • Protect the fibres from water • Protect the high voltage from shorting (to sea) • Maintain the cable tensile force The Cable Junction Box components: B the connections housing and T and T’ the endcaps

  7. Baikal The Cable Junction Box connection housing

  8. Baikal The Cable terminating end-cap A C B • the anchoring unit • the waterproofing unit • Fibres protection and fibres splice box base

  9. Baikal The Cable terminating end-cap Details of the waterproofing unit and the in side of the end-cap flange

  10. We have designed, construct and tested a Cable Junction Box with one cable terminating end-cap at one end and a dummy end-cap at the other end at full pressure test (480 atm, one week). More-over we tested its tensile strength and it was found in excess of cable tensile test. We believe that we can built any Cable Junction Box that we will need in KM3NeT.
