Themes • Themes are the big (or universal) ideas an author is writing about in a work of literature. • Here are four themes from The House of the Scorpion (HOTS): • The value of life • The importance of developing self-identity • The relationship between religion and science • The impact of friendship

Long Term AssignmentQuote Notes • For each chapter you will need to produce Quote Notes. • This involves creating a double-entry journal where you write a quotation on the left, and explain its significance on the right. • These should be written on binder paper, and stapled neatly. You will turn them in on 3/26. • Each chapter requires you to produce two Quote Notes. • One on a theme • One on a literary device • Literary devices could be (but are not limited to) metaphors, similes, imagery, personification, irony and alliteration.
