  5. Latin America after WWII • Population increases rapidly • Cities grew dramatically • Women, labor, and lower classes become important political forces • Latin American nations attempted to reduce imports and took steps towards economic cooperation

  6. Mexico • One of the most politically stable countries in Latin America • Mexico did face economic problems • Many Mexicans fled illegally to US seeking jobs • This migration greatly strained US-Mexican relations

Nicaragua/Cuba • 1979 revolution brought on by Marxist regime • Peace will remain elusive for many central American countries • Economic and political problems continue to plague the region • Revolution in Cuba sets up Castro and Communist government • 1962 the Soviet aid Cuba led to confrontation between US and Soviets • Castro tries to export revolution to other Caribbean nations who continued to experience political, economic and social unrest • Problems facing countries of S America Economic, civilian and military dictatorships, revolutions and drug trade
