Psalm 17:8Keep me as the apple of the eye; Hide me under the shadow of thy wings, Proverbs 7:2Keep my commandments and live; And my law as the apple of thine eye. The Apple of the Eye • The Hebrew phrase is lit. “the little man of the eye”; 'iyshown 'ayin (אישון עין) referring to the small image of a person’s reflection seen in the pupil (Deut. 32:10; Prov. 7:2) • The Hebrew phrase in Psalm 17:8 and Lam. 2:18 is “the daughter of the eye” (Heb. bath); in Zechariah 2:8 it is “the gate of the eye” (Heb. babah) • The Latin word “pupil” refers to a small child; again referring to the small image in the pupil

The Apple of the Eye • The LXX has “the apple of the eye” in Deut. 32:10; Psa. 17:8; Zech. 2:8 (Gr. koreen, a little girl); “the pupils of thine eyes” in Prov. 7:2 (Gr. koras, young girl); “the apple of thine eyes” (Gr. thugater, daughter) • The English phrase “apple of the eye” refers to the “pupil of the eye” because an apple is small and round like the pupil (see NASV); figuratively, it means cherished; precious; carefully protected

  5. The Apple of the Eye God cherishes for his people… • Through providence (Mt. 6:26) • Through provisions (Heb. 10:25) • Through patience (Rom. 2:4; 2 Pet. 3:9; Rev. 2:21)

  6. The Apple of the Eye • God’s people are cherished by God (Deut. 32:10; Eph. 1:3ff) • But some among the cherished do not continue to follow God (Deut. 32:15ff; Heb. 6:4-6) • The cherished state does not mean that no punishment will follow (Deut. 32:21ff; Mt. 25:46)

  7. The Apple of the Eye God’s people must cherish God’s word… • God’s word must be: “keep,” “lay up,” “bind them,” “write them,” “say” (Prov. 7:1-5) • God’s word must be most desirable (Psa. 19:10; 119:1ff; Job 23:12) • God’s word must not be considered outdated, unreliable, or powerless

  8. The Apple of the Eye • To cherish God and His word our eye must be “single” – focused, clear (Mt. 6:22-23; Lk. 22:34) • Do we need a spiritual eye exam (Mt. 13:15; Eph. 1:18)?
