On a growth track Tampere is a vital urban region with a convincing growth forecast and a strong position Growth is driven by the creative economy, open communities and work environments for innovators, sustainable development, eco-efficiency, new logistic solutions and new opportunities in international medical care. Growth is based on cutting-edge expertise in mechanical engineering and automation, information and communication technologies, health and biotechnologies, energy technologies, and creative and experience industries.

Someone recommended Finland to me because of the high standard of education and safe living. So I ended up in Tampere to study international business. I didn’t speak a word of Finnish when I came, but people were very helpful and it’s easy to get by in English.”

  5. Desire to learn • Tampere has a high standard of education. Close to 70% of over 15-year-olds have completed secondary, tertiary or researcher-level education. • Basic education is offered to everyone either in Finnish, English, German or French. Those choosing the Finnish curriculum have the right to join a preparatory class for the first year to learn Finnish. • Both vocational and IB-programme studies are available in English. • Some 40,000 students study in these higher education institutes • The University of Tampere • Tampere University of Technology • TAMK University of Applied Sciences • HAMK University of Applied Sciences • The Police College of Finland

Bright opportunities As a growing economic area Tampere Region is warmly welcoming newcomers – job opportunities vary from traditional heavy industry to most sophisticated functions in science and R&D. Finnish language skills are appreciated in the working life, but professionals can get by in English. Tampere offers a range of opportunities to study Finnish – courses can even be tailored to workplaces.

  7. Multicultural and diverse Some 10,000 non-Finns live in the region. The most commonly spoken foreign languages are Russian, Arabic, English and Estonian. All in all, Tampere is very multicultural with over 120 nationalities. English is spoken widely in all the city offices, and translation services are available in urgent matters. The Immigrant Advice Centre of the City of Tampere serves immigrants in 16 languages in all daily matters. The service is free of charge and available to everyone.

People are friendly, the medical care system is very good, public transportation is reliable and punctual, and there’s so much to do in my free time. What I particularly love here is the nature. Everyone needs a moment to calm down, and I can find peace and serenity in the wilderness. I climb up the high ridge and breathe fresh air and enjoy the lake and woodland scenery, I pick berries and mushrooms, go fishing and Nordic walking.”
