UNIT 25 SPORT AS A BUSINESS

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness)


Aim & Purpose

This unit will enable learners to explore aspects of business in sport and enable them to conduct and use market research.

Learning Outcomes:

Know how businesses in sport are organised

Know what makes a successful sports business

Know the legal and financial influences on sport as business

Be able to use market research and marketing for a sports business.


Student Task

List as many sports businesses as you can. Remember, a business is a profit making entity.


Types of Business

  • Sole Trader

  • Partnership

  • Private Limited Company

  • Public Limited Company

  • Franchises


Private Limited Companies

  • Separate Finance

  • Subject to Corporation Tax

  • Greater Responsibilities (Administration)

  • Owned by its Shareholders

  • Registered with Companies House


Public Limited Company

  • ‘PLC’

  • Company Secretary must be a Professional Person

  • Can ‘Offer’ Shares on the Stock Exchange

  • Must produce Financial Records

  • Must Produce an Annual Report


Sole Traders & Franchises

  • Owned & Controlled by One person

  • Lone Responsibility

  • Limited Administration

  • Right or Privilege

  • Licensing of a Product or Service (Coaching)

  • Contractual Relationship
