  2. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” John 20:30-31 (NKJV) 30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

  3. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • Explanation as to why the Lord passed through Samaritan territory (1-4). • The actual exchange between Jesus and this woman (5-26). • The effect that ultimately was produced as a result of this incident (27-42).

  4. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • The success of Jesus aroused the enmity of the Jewish leaders. (4:1-3) • He leaves Judea to go to Galilee, needing to go through Jerusalem. (4:3,4) • Passing through Samaria was not the only route - nor was it the most common one.

  5. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • Because of Jewish hostilities, the Jews would travel around Samaritan territory. • The Lord, however, did not hesitate to traverse Samaritan territory (Luke 9:51-56; 17:11-19; John 4:1ff).

  6. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • Some view this “must needs” language as referring to a “compulsion other than mere convenience. (Luke 2:49; 4:43; 19:5; 24:7; John 9:4; 10:16; 20:9). • He came to the city of Sychar in the region of Samaria (4:5,6).

  7. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • It was near Mt. Gerizim, (2,850’), about forty miles north of Jerusalem. • Some identify the city with modern Askar, slightly more than 1/2 mile north of Jacob’s well; while others locate the city at the ruins of ancient Shechem

  8. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • John says it was “near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph” (4:5; Gen 48:22) • When the Lord arrived at Jacob’s well, he sat down, “being wearied with his journey” (4:6). • “Sixth hour” - about noon?

  9. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • The eternal Word (1:1) became incarnate (1:14) & endured the rigors of mankind. • The Creator is now weary — Why? (He was also hungry (Mat 4:2), thirsty (Jn 19:28), tearful (John 11:35), etc.)

  10. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • She was of the region of Samaria, (Sychar), not the town of Samaria. • “Samaritans” - resulted from intermarriages between Hebrews of the northern kingdom and Assyrian settlers 722-21 B.C. - also pagan settlers during the captivity

  11. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • She was shocked to hear a Jewish man ask for a drink from her. • First - “Jews have no dealings with Samaritans” (v. 9). • Second, her gender. Jewish men did not speak to women in public (4:27).

  12. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • The normal prejudices of the day would prohibit public conversation between Jesus and this woman. • A Jewish Rabbi would rather go thirsty than violate these proprieties.

  13. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • A Samaritan well aware of the prejudices - 9 • Aware of Jacob & scriptures - 12 • She was a sinner - 17-18 • She was religiously inclined - 19,20 • Expecting the Messiah - 25

  14. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” • Took advantage of a social occasion - 7 • Began from established common interest - 7,10 • Used occasion to discuss spiritual things - 10,13,14 • Gently confronted her sin & error - 16-18, 21-24 • Was direct - 25,26

  15. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” John 4:27-30 (NKJV) 27 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, "What do You seek?" or, "Why are You talking with her?" 28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 "Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?" 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him.

  16. “Jesus In Samaria - Conversing With The Lost” John 4:39-42 (NKJV) 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did." 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word. 42 Then they said to the woman, "Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world."
