  3. What is System 44? • Tier 3 intervention • grades 3-5 • Designed to close significant gaps in their foundational skill literacy knowledge

  4. What does System 44 look like in a classroom? • Instructional model provided • Brief teacher led whole group mini-lesson • Students rotate between interactive computer-adaptive software, small-group teacher led (differentiated) instruction and independent reading.

  5. How do we know which students should be in S44? • Screening Tools: • Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) • Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark level • Students who are identified as 18 months or more below grade level will be administered the Scholastic Phonics Inventory (SPI), which will assist staff in determining if System 44 is appropriate

  6. SPI? • Computer-based assessment that measures decoding and sight-word reading fluency in approximately 10 minutes • Designed to be paired with the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) • Groups students into 4 categories: Advanced Decoder, Developing Decoder, Beginning Decoder and Pre-Decoder.

  7. Goals of S44 Implementation • Align our assessment practices in an effort to better identify students who are in need of additional intervention • Provide a more systematic approach to instruction for our students who are struggling with the foundational skills of reading in grades3-5 • Accelerate student growth for Tier 3 students in the area of reading

  8. What is critical to S44 success in our school? • Dedicated classroom space which includes 8 computer stations. • Use of student identification protocol to identify no more than 18 students in grades 3-5 the program • Schedule that allows for 60 minutes of instruction in System 44 for identified students. This time should not interfere with student’s participation in whole group core literacy instruction in the classroom.

  9. What is critical to S44 success in our school? • Teacher engagement in the following: • Monthly District PLC Sessions specific to System 44 • Onsite observations and coaching by special education support teachers • Communication to parents System 44 students
