There are 2 main means by which the government encourages self-reliance. These are:

  • Part of Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions

  • Money is channeled monthly to Medisave

  • For an adult 35 & below, 20% of CPF goes to Medisave

Encouraging self-reliance allows people to pay for their own healthcare and lessen the burden on the government and taxpayers. This allows government to better manage healthcare by directing resources to areas where it is more needed and not have to pour more money than is necessary
