  8. Current situation • Significant investment by University in storage and staffing • Development and scaling up of services for both storage and management • Governance structure being established • Advocacy programme • Upskilling of relevant staff

  9. Where do I safely keep my data from my fieldwork, as I travel home? How do we ensure we have access to our research data after some of the team have left? How can our research collaborations share data, and make them available once complete? How can I best keep years worth of research data secure and accessible for when I and others need to re-use it? How do we ensure compliance to funders’ requirement for several years of open access to data? 10. Emerging storage policy • Baseline 0.5TB storage for all, free at point of use • Automated transfer to right ‘latency layer’ • Beyond-Edinburgh discipline domains and cloud as part of solution • Authentication, authorisation & access for group sharing and access control • Backup and syncing • Network of support RG PVCs R, Warwick - Dec 2011 11

  11. Edinburgh Policy Wordle

  12. University of Edinburgh Research Data Management Policy The University adopts the following policy on Research Data Management. It is acknowledged that this is an aspirational policy, and that implementation will take some years. • Research data will be managed to the highest standards throughout the research data lifecycle as part of the University’s commitment to research excellence. 2. Responsibility for research data management through a sound research data management plan during any research project or programme lies primarily with Principal Investigators (PIs). 3. All new research proposals] must include research data management plans or protocols that explicitly address data capture, management, integrity, confidentiality, retention, sharing and publication.

  13. 4. The University will provide training, support, advice and where appropriate guidelines and templates for the research data management and research data management plans. 5. The University will provide mechanisms and services for storage, backup, registration, deposit and retention of research data assets in support of current and future access, during and after completion of research projects. 6. Any data which is retained elsewhere, for example in an international data service or domain repository should be registered with the University. 7. Research data management plans must ensure that research data are available for access and re-use where appropriate and under appropriate safeguards.

  14. 8. The legitimate interests of the subjects of research data must be protected. 9. Research data of future historical interest, and all research data that represent records of the University, including data that substantiate research findings, will be offered and assessed for deposit and retention in an appropriate national or international data service or domain repository, or a University repository. 10.Exclusive rights to reuse or publish research data should not be handed over to commercial publishers or agents without retaining the rights to make the data openly available for re-use, unless this is a condition of funding.

  15. Emerging RDM services will include Pre-award: self-help and help for preparation of RDM plans on website, using DCC DMP Online; links to appropriate domains; links to CRIS; Data management throughout the project: guidance on storing & managing data, incl compliance and built-in curation, to ensure good practice from the outset Metadata service: advisory service on creating metadata Data storage throughout the project: provision of information about Edinburgh research data storage services University register of RD assets, regardless of location Archiving data: services to help researchers decide how to archive data at end of project or other appropriate point Long term preservation and access: services to ensure the appropriate data is cared for in the longer term Making research data visible: information about how to make research data available to defined audiences RG PVCs R, Warwick - Dec 2011 16

  16. RDM-RDS Group: Seeking Nomenclature!

  17. Challenges • Sustainable funding • Getting engagement from researchers • The open agenda for impact and visibility • Keeping on top of fast moving developments • Staff development for new roles • Working across domains: • Understanding the library roles: archiving, metadata, training, preservation • Use this major University project as a way of looking at library issues

  18. Grab the opportunity • Large University project • Addressing issues where we have expertise • Archiving, metadata, long term preservation and access, training researchers • Get involved, use our expertise • Upskilling, working with other professions • Use the emerging infrastructure for other data (eg corporate archive) • Values
