  3. Point of View Your Task: Make sure the following are present • Only use 3rd person (them, they, one, the reader, etc.) 2. Look for “we”, “our”, “I”, or “you” in the paper and CIRCLE it English II (CP)– Harmon – Lake Zurich H.S.

  4. Introduction Your Task: Make sure the following are present 1. Attention getter – something that entices audience 2. General statement (at least 2 sentences) connects to theme 3. Linking sentence connects gen idea to text, 4. Introduces author, title of text 5. Background information provides appropriate context 5. Clear thesis at end of introduction - CIRCLE the thesis - Author, Title + Literary Element = Universal Theme (Theme must be a message from story ) - Written in present tense - ONLY one sentence English II (CP)– Harmon – Lake Zurich H.S.

  5. Diction / Word Choice Your Task: Make sure the following are present 1. Identify “boring” words and CIRCLE them (Examples include: “thing,” “get,” “good,” “very,” “stuff”) • CIRCLE words that could be replaced with more sophisticated or specific words (kids, guy, etc.) • Read a phrase aloud – does it sound awkward or informal? If so, make note of it! Not sure? Ask a neighbor! • Cross out any use of “this quote shows…” • Circle if they use the same verb (i.e. show, illustrates, etc.) more than once in a given paragraph • CIRCLE ANY CONTRACTIONS! Lead-ins Your Task: Make sure the following are present Bad example: Harrison fights for freedom at the end of the story,“He flung away his rubber-ball nose, and revealed a man that would have awed Thor, the god of thunder” (Vonnegut 12). Good example: Thundering into the television studio, Harrison fights for his freedom by “[flinging] away his rubber-ball nose, and [revealing] a man that would have awed Thor, the god of thunder” (Vonnegut 12).   7. Lead-Ins Your Task: Make sure the following are present 1. Make sure all lead-ins “flow” as a complete sentence with the quotation… - Underline Every lead-in; if missing CIRCLE - Provides appropriate context for quote (briefly explains situation leading up to quote) - Adapts quote to present tense using [brackets] - Uses quotation marks around quote “…” (Author 34). 2. Secondary lead in’s suggest how the author’s ideas apply to your argument. (Ex. “Holleran supports this claim, suggesting that…” English II (CP)– Harmon – Lake Zurich H.S.

Body Paragraphs Your Task: Make sure the following are present - Each body paragraph contains Topic / Closing sentence. - BOTH must mention lit. element and theme - 2ndand/or 3rdshould review previous examples - Provides analysis for BOTH primary, secondary source (explains how this is evidence of lit. element and/or the UNIVERSAL theme) - Does the quote truly support their point? - If not, please put a QQ(Questionable Quote) - Secondary quote MAY NOT contain a quote from the primary source.   9. Body Paragraphs (continued) Your Task: Make sure the following are present 1. Incorporates a primary and secondary quote in EACH of the body paragraphs 2. TWO DIFFERENT sources used overall! 3.   10. Verb Tense Your Task: Make sure the following are present 1. All verbs should be in PRESENT tense throughout - If missing CIRCLE 2. Adapts verbs within quotations using [brackets] to fit with PRESENT tense - If missing CIRCLE English II (CP)– Harmon – Lake Zurich H.S.
