  2. “You and Me” What day is it? And in what month? This clock never seemed so alive. I can't keep up, and I can't back down. I've been losing so much time. ‘Cause it's you and me and all of the people With nothing to do, nothing to lose. And it's you and me and all of the people, And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you. All of the things that I want to say Just aren't coming out right. I'm tripping on words, you got my head spinning. I don't know where to go from here. ‘Cause it's you and me and all of the people With nothing to do, nothing to prove. And it's you and me and all of the people, And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you. Something about you now I can't quite figure out. Everything she does is beautiful; Everything she does is right. ‘Cause it's you and me and all of the people With nothing to do, nothing to lose. And it's you and me and all of the people. And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of… You and me and all of the people With nothing to do and nothing to prove. And it's you and me and all of the people. And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you. What day is it? And in what month? This clock never seemed so alive. (“Lifehouse Lyrics: You and Me Lyrics.”)

  3. Research by Billboard Magazine determined that Lifehouse’s “You and Me” was its all-time number-1 adult pop song from 1996 to 2011. Barb Richards, program director for radio station WAJI in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, said that “for years in our music research, the band's ‘You and Me’ [song] consistently showed up as our top-testing title. Apparently, our listeners had it right.” (Trust) Released on Lifehouse’s self-titled third album, Lifehouse, in March 2005, the song had already “begun making a splash at U.S. Adult Top 40 radio stations and [was] currently the No. 2 most downloaded track at Apple's iTunes Music Store” almost two months before its album release. (“Lifehouse Readying Third Album”) “You and Me” has been featured on popular TV shows including Season 4 of WB’s Smallville. Lifehouse performed as the Senior Prom band while Clark Kent (young Superman) finally gained the nerve…and stopped “tripping on words”long enough…to finally ask high school sweetheart Lana Lang to dance. (Younis) “You and Me”by Jason Wade and Jude Cole

  4. What day is it? And in what month? This clock never seemed so alive. I can't keep up, and I can't back down. I've been losing so much time. Personificationis used in “This clock never seemed so alive” as if the clock has a mind of its own. The “living” clock adds to the narrator’s disorientation and out-of-control feeling; he can’t understand how the months, days, and hours can pass so quickly.

  5. All of the things that I want to say Just aren't coming out right. I'm tripping on words, you got my head spinning. I don't know where to go from here. Imagery: “Tripping on words” shows how words can be so difficult to handle that they can be tripped on with the tongue, as many of us discover when we stutter or mispronounce common words when nervous—or even say words we never meant to use. In this song, the imagery gives a clear picture of a young man so nervous when speaking to the girl he loves that hecan’t say what he really means.

  6. These lines are a possible allusionto Roger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella musical in which the prince sings to Cinderella, “Do I love you because you’re beautiful, or are you beautiful because I love you?” (“Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?”) No person can do everything right, but the narrator is so in love that he sees the girl as perfect…and beautiful…in every way.

  7. Timeis defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as: “a : the measured or measurable period during which an action, process, or condition exists or continues : duration.b : a nonspatial continuum that is measured in terms of events which succeed one another from past through present to future.” Is time based on the laws of physics, or is it purely in the mind of conscious beings? “Largely because of Albert Einstein, it is now held that time cannot be treated in isolation from space.” (“Time”) If time is based on the physical world, is time travel possible? As described by physicist Stephen Hawking, “A wormhole is a theoretical ‘tunnel’ or shortcut, predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity, that links two places in space-time [shown in the diagram at right] as the contours of a 3-D map, where negative energy pulls space and time into the mouth of a tunnel, emerging in another universe. They remain only hypothetical, as obviously nobody has ever seen one, but have been used in films as conduits for time travel,” such as in 1994’s Stargate (Hawking).

  8. “You and Me” songwriterJason Wade founded Lifehouse with drummer Ricky Woolstenhulme, Jr. after they met in Los Angeles in the late 1990’s. “Lifehouse released its smash debut [album], No Name Face,in 2000, which launched them to global stardom. Their breakout single ‘Hanging by a Moment’ was the single most-played radio track of 2001.” Later, they added replacement bassist Bryce Soderberg and new guitarist Ben Carey. Lifehouse has sold more than five million albums plus more than three million singles online, including number-one hits “You and Me” and their first single, “Hanging By a Moment.” (Lifehouse) The band’s alternative-style music ranges from deeply moving songs about life and love to hard-hitting rock that makes listeners want to crank up the volume.
