  2. Structure and Powers of Virginia State Government • The form of government of the Commonwealth of Virginia is established by the Virginia Constitution. • The Virginia Constitution distributes power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the state government.

  3. Virginia Legislative Branch • The legislative branch is the General Assembly, a bicameral legislature— • -the House of Delegates • - 100 members representing 100 districts • -the Virginia Senate - 40 members representing 40 districts • They meet annually for a fixed number of days.

  4. Virginia Executive Branch • The executive power is exercised by the governor- • -elected for a four-year term of office • -Term Limit: unlimited, but they must be non-consecutive. Rarely serves more than one term • -How is the Governor elected? • -Governor is elected by the popular vote of the state • -In the unlikely event of a tie, the General Assembly will select • the governor. • -appoints members of the cabinet

Virginia Executive Cabinet • Oversee specific functions of government •   -lieutenant governor and attorney general are • executive branch officers • -elected for a four-year term of office. • -lieutenant governor’s job is to assist the governor with his responsibilities • -attorney general’s jobs include: • -Providing legal advice in court for the state government • -Defending the state in cases of criminal appeals and suits • against the state • -Defending the constitutionality of state laws • -Collecting money owed to various state institutions

  6. Virginia Judicial Branch • The judicial power is exercised by a court system that consists of four levels of courts- • -Supreme Court • -Court of appeals • -Circuit courts • -District courts • -including small claims courts and juvenile and • domestic relations courts
