  1. Elevation of given points on topographic maps Mr. DeMarco

  2. Sample Topographic Map: What could be a possible elevation of point x? 837 800 700 x 600 500 400 300 200 100

  3. Let’s turn this map sideways to get a better look: There is the point, “x” that I wanted to find…. 837 800 700 600 500 400 x 300 200 100 Let's zoom in

  4. Close-up of the same map: 400 x 300 Because “x” is not specifically labeled, we don’t know its exact elevation, but we do know that “x” is between and ft. 300 400

  5. So…what could the value of “x” be? If it was 300ft, it would be directly on the 300ft. contour line. If it was 400ft, it would be directly on the 400ft. contour line. But it falls between the two! That leaves us with a range of values that “x” could be. 301-399

  6. 301-399 We know what X could be! 837 800 700 x 600 500 400 300 200 100

  7. You try one! What could be a possible elevation of point x? 837 800 x 700 600 500 400 300 200 100

  8. You try one! What is the highest possible elevation of point x? x 800 700 600 500 400 300 200 100 Answer on next slide

  9. 899 ft • We know the contour interval is 100ft • That means that if there were to be another contour line above 800ft here, it would be 900ft. But there is not! • So we know that it could be up to899ft, and still be shown the same way on this map! 800 700 600 500 400 300 200 100
