  1. Invasion of the E-BooksJulia Loren

  2. The Revolutionary 3 • Amazon sparked the e-reader revolution with the first Kindle a mere 4 years ago, and it now already sells more e-books than all print books combined. • Barnes & Noble, the century-old bricks-and-mortar bookseller, Nook e-reader is the Kindle’s biggest competitor. • Apple has some issues

  3. Think Before You Leap In • Be intentional about who you are and where you are going in the future • What do you want this e-book to accomplish? • Planning your brand v Planning your legacy • Personal legacy, art and poetry books should be in print • Once you publish ANYTHING online, you cannot take it off. • BEWARE: Amazon will NEVER remove your book from their records but you can make it “unavailable”.

  4. Show Me the Money! • Many self-published e-book authors make very little money. • A 1,007-person survey earlier last year found "DIY authors" make $10,000 a year on average, and half of them make less than $500 a year, according to a report in The Guardian. • What is your motive for publishing an e-book?

  5. Howey’s Got it Howey, author of the "Wool" series, never promoted the first edition of "Wool," a dystopian series about a group of underground people who get all of their information about the outside world through a single, digital screen. He didn't think it would sell. Then in October 2011, he said, his sales jumped from from dozens to thousands. "I was taking screenshots and posting them on Facebook," he said of the moment when the books started appearing on Amazon's top-100 lists. (The compilation "Wool Omnibus Edition" is currently ranked No. 193 in the Kindle store, although it was listed in Amazon's press conference as being in the top 100, where it has appeared before). "I was kind of bewildered by the whole thing.” New York publishers have approached him about book deals, he said, but he wants to continue to self-publish so he maintains rights to his work. "The stigma is gone," he said of self-publishing in digital formats. "Publishers will pick up a self-published work if it does well. Readers are really just interested in good stories."

  7. E-book as a medium of expression Best For: • Pop culture – novels, how-to, business, religion, travel, etc. • Dated material – info only good for a year • Experimental writing & Music/Video-enhanced books • Information dissemination- lengthy articles & TED Talks • Citizen Journalism – mixed media book & video

  8. Sensitive Info & Citizen Journalism How do you uncover issues or speak the truth and protect yourself from retribution? Or write about sensitive missions? Publish under your own name or an alias/avatar? Set up your KDP account as a “Publisher” using a business name and note that you have the rights to publish others’ works, under other author names. As a publisher, book sales from the “authors” you publish are deposited directly into your business account. There is no real privacy so be careful what you put out there as an e-book or social media!

  9. Kiddi E-Books, Really? E-book format worst for: • Children’s Books • K-6 Text Books • Health impact • Relational impact

  10. How to Create an E-Book • Write with excellence • Edit with excellence and with your target audience in mind • RE-Write with the opening pages targeted as an e-book sample. • Create an awesome cover with few words that looks good as a thumbnail image • Format it and preview it and fix it • Upload it to various e-book distribution outlets

  11. E-Book Covers • Different than a print book • Image is everything • Let your words be few or strategic • It has to look good as a thumbnail • Get a pro to design it!

  12. How to Format • Get professional help to create a good looking e-book. • If it is a short (10,000-20,000 words) book, DIY! Each e-book distributor has different methods. You can upload a .doc and most will convert it to their .mobi or whatever – but be sure to preview it and get the formatting right. • Epub (Apple iPad/iBooks, Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo, and most e-reading apps including Stanza, Aldiko, Adobe Digital Editions, others) • Kindle (.mobi for Kindle devices and Kindle apps) • PDF (good for reading on PC, or for home printing) • Amazon will pull books that look sloppy. Quality increases sales and decreases returns. • Kindle Fire now supports Video-Enhanced e-books. • If you are branding yourself, do it with excellence.
