  1. THORPEX Mid-Term Review Jim Caughey THORPEX IPO WWRP JSC 5, WMO Geneva 11-13 April 2012

  2. MTR • At ICSC 8 (Nov. 2009) it was requested that the IPO compiles a mid-term report or review on THORPEX Time-line for preparation of a draft mid-term review of THORPEX achievements i. Request review material from Working Group and Regional Committee Chairs, Field Experiment PIs etc. by 31 May 2010 ii. IPO to prepare preliminary draft paper iii. Select independent experts (by EC3) iv. Convene a small Workshop mid-September to prepare a reviewed draft for ICSC 9 v. Arrange publication of key achievements - post ICSC 9

MTR • Material from WGs, RCs etc., was generally slow to arrive (and of very variable quality) - some has still not arrived - from Winter T-PARC. • EC 3 decided that the WWRP JSC (with its new composition) should act as independent reviewer • ICSC 9 was held in September 2011 and a draft MTR was tabled at that meeting. • ICSC 9 members were then invited to comment on the report and provide any additional material by the end of Nov. 2011 • It was also agreed to add an Exec. Summary

MTR • A revised version of the complete MTR was then placed on the website in Jan. 2012 and comments invited by WWRP JSC members. • The THORPEX EC met on the 8th March 2012 and made some suggestions for improvements mainly in relation to the Executive Summary • Following comments by JSC 5 a final version will be prepared for ICSC 10 which will meet in October 2012.

  5. MTR There are 3 sections • Executive Summary • An Overview of International Activities and Achievements – WGs, field campaigns etc., • Regional Activities and Achievements – RCs etc., • The second and third parts contain considerable detail whilst the first attempts to provide a fairly short overview of the main activities and successes.

  6. MTR –Exec. Summary • Introduction – origin/objectives of the programme • Governance and Structure – ICSC, EC, WGs, RCs, IPO and Trust Fund – note the Trust Fund only achieved about 50% of the intended level. The Stakeholder Panel was not formed, SERA WG moved to WWRP, Obs. Systems was combined with DA • Major achievements – field campaigns, research data bases, projects, major reports, workshops, science symposia, summer schools, national THORPEX programmes e.g. in the USA , THORPEX China etc., as well as recent proposals for new projects e.g. sub-seasonal to seasonal and polar prediction. Collaboration with WCRP. Contribution to GEO (GEOWOW). • Beyond THORPEX - building on the THORPEX legacy for the future

  7. MTR • If you have not already done so please send specific comments and proposals for additions/changes to Tetsuo and myself – • By end of April
