  4. What is WHAT? • a private, non-profit "doctor's office for teens", provides affordable, accessible physical and mental health services to teens in Southeastern North Carolina. WHAT works with both teens and families, while coordinating care with other appropriate health care providers in the region. • It was created in 1997 by concerned citizens for our youth, funded by a grant from the Duke Endowment

  5. Mission Statement • Wilmington Health Access for Teens is a private, non-profit health care center which provides affordable, accessible physical and mental health services to unserved and underserved teens, emphasizing a family-centered approach, while coordinating care and referrals with appropriate area providers.

  6. Population Served • WHAT • Any teen who wants to go to a doctor • High Schools: Lakeside and New Hanover • The students can go free of charge

  7. Lakeside High School • A school only for 9th graders • For students who got kicked out of their school • It allows them to take classes so they will not fail • Has a drop-out recovery program that tries to prevent dropping out and letting students who did get back into school

  9. Mental Health Wellness • Columbia University Teen Screen • It uses the DPS scale to predict if the student might commit suicide or has an undiagnosed mental illness • Teen Questionnaire • Students fill this out when they come see the nurse. It has mental health questions that we review when we give the test.

  10. Teen Screen • It indicates if the student may have a mental disorder or if they are suicidal, or both • It is rated as either Positive or Negative • Positive mean the test detected some problems • If Positive, the student is scheduled a time to meet with the psychologist for further assessment • All students who come into the nurse’s office will eventually be scheduled to take the test, but it is completely voluntary

  11. Duties and Responsibilities • Primary Responsibility • Review the teen questionnaire and administer the Teen Screen. • Make appointments for the students to either take the Teen Screen or come talk to Mike • Co-Facilitating Anger Management Group • A woman named Sarah goes around the schools in New Hanover County to do these groups • She teaches them various techniques to control their anger in a situation that might lead to a fight

  12. After School Groups • Anger Management • There is a girls and boys group that meets on separate days • WISE Guys • The main objective is to inform boys about sex and teen pregnancy • ACCESS • Substance abuse prevention group • Teaches students about drugs and tries to prevent usage • All kids are interviewed separately and then chosen to be in the group
