Capulets • Juliet – daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet, she is 13 years old • Tybalt – Lady Capulet’s nephew, Juliet’s cousin, very violent and hot-tempered • Nurse – Servant who has cared for Juliet since infancy, she loves to talk and reminisce • Peter – The Nurse’s servant, very immature • Sampson – Servant • Gregory – Servant • Old Man – Elderly relative of the family

  4. Montagues • Romeo – son of Lord and Lady Montague, he is about 16 • Benvolio – Lord Montague’s nephew, Romeo’s cousin and friend, calm, courteous, and gentle • Balthasar – Romeo’s servant • Abram – a servant • Mercutio – relative of the Prince and suitor to Juliet, rude, talkative, quick-tempered, and teases Romeo

  5. The other important characters • Friar Lawrence – A Franciscan Friar, friend of both Romeo and Juliet • Prince Escalus – Prince of Verona, concerned about maintaining the peace at all costs • Friar John – Another Franciscan Friar, works under Friar Lawrence • The Apothecary – He sells different kinds of medicines to different kinds of people. • Paris – Relative of the Prince who is courting Juliet, polite and handsome

  6. Family Crests • Family Crests, or Coats of Arms, date to the early Middle Ages because armor was making it difficult to tell people apart. • They decided to paint something on their honor to help with this • They were important in battle, but also worked kind of like team uniforms in tournaments • Over time, shield emblem designs became enduring symbols of their owners, and of their owners’ families

  7. It started to become fashionable to have a ‘coat of arms’, so people hired artists to design them • They started putting them on tunics, saddle blankets, banners, tapestries, sculptures, architectural features, signs, advertisements, coins, jewelry, and stamps. • It became a thing for every one to do, not just soldiers • It also helped people recognize each other’s marks when few people could read or write.

  8. We are going to design our own coat of arms! A quote that represents you A picture of you Five things you enjoy to do Leave this space blank for now
