  2. Question: • How can the Internet be used to improve rehabilitation training worldwide? Answer: • Post “best lectures” in rehabilitation

  3. Question: • Will faculty share lectures? Answer: • Yes. The Global Supercourse in Epidemiology has 4600 faculty from >3500 universities from 110 countries who created a Library of Lectures with 449 lectures available on the Internet. This is being shared worldwide.

  4. The Internet Promotes Sharing • The Internet promotes • Information sharing • Free software • In contrast, higher education lectures are rarely shared.

  5. A Global Faculty Lecture-Share • Dr. Laporte proposed that global faculty share their slide-based lectures in a web-based "library of lectures." • He established the Global Supercourse in Epidemiology, the Internet and Global Health: http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/ )

  6. An International Success Story • 2000 faculty in 110 countries • 427 lectures available for worldwide use • 30 new lectures each month • The site is mirrored in 32 countries • There is a server in Beijing

  7. Lecture Quality is Important • There is appropriate quality assurance • On-line reviews by the users • Expert authors • Lectures are updated and revised

  8. Lecture Format • PowerPoint with hypertext • Graphics are simple for fast transmission • Students can go deep into the Internet for more information • Lectures include links to online resources • British Medical Association has put current text books online • We include an electronic library

  9. Lectures “Train the Teacher” • The Library of Lectures consists of exciting template lectures by experts in the field. • The classroom teacher “takes” them out for free like a library book. • We train the teacher rather than direct distance teaching of students.

The Goal: Universal Access • Fast Presentation Speed: • We have developed technologies to speed access to lectures world wide • Multilingual Versions • For global use, the first lecture is in 8 languages • Conquering the Digital Divide • We are copying the Supercourse on CDs and floppies to reach the 95% of the world not connected

  11. The Next Step: A Rehabilitation Supercourse • Brubaker and Cohn established the Supercourse in Health and Rehabilitation www.shrs.pitt.edu/supercourse • The site has 40+ lectures, and is ready to accept lectures from an international audience
