  1. Obtaining 501(C)(3) status and your Tax ID number

  2. Why do you need a TIN and 501(c)(3)? • A TIN allows you to set up with business. You can register and possibly save money for the club • A TIN is also required to open an account for the chapter. • 501(c)(3) is needed for collecting money for charities, making donations, and having a bank account.

  3. Obtain a Tax ID number first • You have three ways of obtaining a Tax ID number (Employer Identification Number (EIN)) • You can go to the IRS Web Site: • http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=97860,00.html • You can Fax or mail in the Form SS-4 • http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fss4.pdf • Use the IRS web site to obtain the mailing address or fax number. • Best way, call: • 1-800-829-1040 • M-F 0700-2200 your local time

  4. Information required • Down load the Form SS-4 • They will ask what type of organization you are • Military, Veteran, organization that promotes safety and education to military motorcyclists. • Have a POC and supply: • Trade name: • Do not use the following • Green Knights Motorcycle Club • Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club • GKMMC • Suggest using: • Green Knights Chapter (enter your number) • SSAN • State you have no employees • You will raise less then 4K per year

  5. Your TIN • If you call by phone the operator will give you your tin before hanging up. (process takes 10 min from start to finish) • If you use the web site, you will be given your TIN before exiting the site. • If you mail or fax in your info, it will take a while for them to get it to you.

  6. 501(c)(3) Org • The best way to apply will be to call: • 1-877-829-5500 • Have your TIN ready • They will ask you for an organization name. • Do not use the following: • Trade name: Do not use the following • Green Knights Motorcycle Club • Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club • GKMMC • Suggest using: • Green Knights Chapter (enter your number) • You want to indicate to them you are a military motorcycle club. • Tell them you want to apply as an unofficial org • This will keep you from filling out a Form 1023 and paying the $400 application fee.
