  1. Volunteer Role Profile Eating Positively Nutrition Assistant The Food Chain provides nutrition services including home delivered meals, essential groceries and nutrition advice to men, women and children who are chronically sick as a result of HIV related illness. We aim to ensure that no one living with the virus has their ability to get well and stay well adversely affected by lack of access to appropriate food. All our services are provided with the help and support of around 600 volunteers. What is Eating Positively? Eating Positively is our series of cookery and nutrition classes. They provide our service users with a greater understanding of nutrition and how to eat a balanced and varies diet as well as practical demonstrations in preparing meals. As the Eating Positively Nutrition Assistant you’ll be supporting our nutritionists in delivering a nutrition information class. The classes we deliver are: shopping and Eating well on a budget managing symptoms through food and lifestyle introduction to Nutrition and HIV managing or reducing the risk of developing chronic conditions What does the role involve? Your responsibilities will be negotiated with the Nutritionist in advance but will include: delivering sections of a nutrition presentation (you can work up to delivering sections by yourself) helping to lead group activities answering nutrition questions from class members assisting service users with filling in questionnaires some light washing up The sections of the presentation you will help to deliver are: managing medication side-effects through diet food Life Skills (such as eating on a budget, cooking with limited facilities, and how to read food labels effectively) the Eatwell Plate and healthy choices for people living with HIV How often do I need to volunteer? How much time do I need to give? At the moment, classes are running every Monday at out Kings Cross kitchen from 3pm – 6pm. You need to arrive at 2.30pm to go over the presentation with the Nutritionist and decide which sections you will deliver or help to deliver. We are launching classes on a Thursday In August 2013. What training and support will I get? Volunteer Induction HIV Awareness Training HIV Nutrition Training Support form our Nutritionist and Training and Volunteer Coordinator We will reimburse your travel expenses up to the cost of a one-day zone 1-6 travelcard. What skills do I need to be a really good Eating Positively Nutrition Assistant? Ideally, you will be studying for or have a degree in Nutrition/Dietetics. Other science related qualifications and/or experience will be considered. You need to be reliable, a good listener and comfortable talking in front of a group Experience of delivering training would be an advantage You need aware of your own limits and refer anything you can’t deal with to the Nutritionist/Dietitian running the session. You can work up to delivering the session by yourself.
