3 Holi Celebration In Different States of India Holi, one of India's most colorful festivals, is just around the corner. Over India, a kaleidoscopic cloud is forming, and it's about to burst! But did you realize there are so many different ways to celebrate this festival around the country? The festival of colors is celebrated in various ways throughout the world.
5 1. Rang Panchami – Maharashtra The festival of colors is also known as Shigma or Rang Panchami in Maharashtra (color on the fifth). Purnima celebrations begin after sunset on Purnima by lighting a firewood pyre (burning Holika), symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The following day is ‘Rang Panchami,' which witnesses the ‘dhoom dhadaka,' or the fun and frolic of people applying color – ‘gulaal – and spraying water (or toppling entire buckets of colored water) on each other. You'll also get to eat a special state delicacy known as 'Puran Poli.’ The festival is marked by singing, dancing, and the preparation of delectable treats as an offering to the god.
7 2. Lathmar Holi & Holi Milan – Uttar Pradesh This unusual way to celebrate the festival of colors can be found in Uttar Pradesh. During this celebration, women run after men with lathis or canes and playfully hit them in the areas of Barsana, Mathura, and Vrindavan. The men arrive armed with a ‘dhal, or shield. As a result, it is known as Lathmar Holi and is celebrated a week before the Holi festival. Thousands of people gather to watch this wild version of Holi. Men and women sing popular Holi songs and chant Radha and Krishna chants. Outside of this region, in Kanpur, Holi lasts seven days, with a grand fair called Ganga Mela or the Holi Mela on the last day.
