Date: June 12, 2018 2017 Electrical Code Subject: GFCI Protection in Commercial Kitchens Section 210.8(B)(2) Question 1: For new installations, under the 2017 NC Electrical Code is ground fault circuit interruption protection for personnel (GFCI) required for receptacles installed in commercial kitchens?

  4. Date: June 12, 2018 2017 Electrical Code Subject: GFCI Protection in Commercial Kitchens Section 210.8(B)(2) Answer 1: Yes. In kitchens that are in “other than dwelling units”, GFCI protection is required for all receptacles that possess either of the following characteristics: I. Single phase, 0 – 150 volts to ground, and 0 – 50 amps 2. Three phase, 0 – 150 volts to ground, and 0 – 100 amps

Date: June 12, 2018 2017 Electrical Code Subject: GFCI Protection in Commercial Kitchens Section 210.8(B)(2) Question 2: If the receptacles that possess the aforementioned characteristics in Answer 1 in commercial kitchens are replaced, will GFCI protection for personnel be required for such receptacles when the original Code complaint installation did not possess GFCI protection?

  7. Date: June 12, 2018 2017 Electrical Code Subject: GFCI Protection in Commercial Kitchens Section 210.8(B)(2) Answer 2: Yes. Replacement of receptacles must comply with section 406.4(D) of the 2017 NC Electrical Code. Section 406.4(D)(3) requires that replaced receptacles possess GFCI protection where other sections of the electrical code require GFCI protection. See 406.(D)(3) Exception if needed. 406.4(D)(3) Exception: Where replacement of the receptacle type is impractical, such as where the outlet box size will not permit the installation of the GFCI receptacle, the receptacle shall be permitted to be replaced with a new receptacle of the existing type, where GFCI protection is provided and the receptacle is marked “GFCI Protected” and “No Equipment Ground,” in accordance with 406.4(D)(2)(a), (b), or (c), as applicable.
