“Shaping the Profession that Shapes America’s Future”

National board certification

Mission

At a summer prep institute, Shenendehowa tech teacher Chris Mars, Niskayuna social studies teacher Stephen Eichfeld and Bethlehem Spanish teacher Shannon Casso team up to draw a tree depicting the five core propositions for what National Board Certified Teachers must know.Photo by Andrew Watson.

To advance student learning and achievement by:

  • Establishing the definitive standards and systems for certifying accomplished educators

  • Providing programs and advocating policies that support excellence in teaching

  • Engaging National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and leaders in that process

T he five core propositions

Teachers are committed to students and their learning.

Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.

Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.

Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.

Teachers are members of learning communities.

The Five Core Propositions

So why are you here today

So Why Are You Here Today?

  • Partner 2 answers.

  • Partner 1 turns the statement into a question.

Benefits for students

Benefits for Students

  • Promoting Student Learning, Growth & Achievement:

  • Numerous studies have shown that students of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) outperform students of non-NBCTs on achievement tests

  • Even greater positive impact for minority and low-income students

  • Among math teachers, this positive impact can be compared with a lack of a significant impact by teachers who held advanced degrees but were not Board certified

Quotes from nbcts

Quotes from NBCTs

"When people go through the master's degree program, it's a lot of theory," Andrew Bankertsaid. "National Board is all about how your teaching can enhance student learning. In the end, kids are the ones who win.“

"It made me remember why I went into teaching in the first place," said Nancy Ketz of Holland Patent near Utica. "It made me do a little risk-taking and try things I hadn't tried before."

One foreign language teacher, who said she was suffering from the "seven-year itch" and feeling a little stale, found the process inspired her to try more interactive and relevant learning activities in her classroom.

Another recalled how much he learned about his teaching style when he watched, in horror, a videotape of what he thought was a perfect history lesson.

"The content was top-notch, but I found out I was doing about 95 percent of the talking," the longtime teacher said. "And none of my questions were open-ended.“

Great support groups too!

Approved for graduate credit

  • Teachers who receive a total weighted scaled score, but who do not achieve certification, are eligible to receive a transcript for 3 graduate credit hours in education
