National Board Certification Candidates demonstrate in-depth content knowledge and teaching practices that are measured against high and rigorous standards All candidates have up to three years to achieve certification – 10 year certification 25 certificate areas structured along two dimensions – the developmental level of the students and the subject areas(s).

Eligibility Prerequisites Applicants must have: • Have completed three full years of teaching/school counseling • Hold a bachelor’s degree • Possess a valid state teaching/school counseling license, or, if teaching where a license is not required, have taught in schools recognized and approved to operate by the state

In the end, kids are the ones who win.“ "It made me remember why I went into teaching in the first place," said Nancy Ketz of Holland Patent near Utica. "It made me do a little risk-taking and try things I hadn't tried before." One foreign language teacher, who said she was suffering from the "seven-year itch" and feeling a little stale, found the process inspired her to try more interactive and relevant learning activities in her classroom.

The American Council on Education (ACE): Based on an independent review of the certification process approved the following: Approved for Graduate Credit • Teachers who achieve National Board Certification are eligible to receive a transcript for 9 graduate credit hours in education (3credits for NBCTs who have renewed Certification) • Teachers who receive a total weighted scaled score, but who do not achieve certification, are eligible to receive a transcript for 3 graduate credit hours in education

NYS Grants and Scholarships • New York State Albert Shanker Grant - $2,000 in funding to support qualified New York State teachers seeking initial National Board Certification • National Board Scholarship Program – first come first serve basis • Other NYS Incentives: $10,000 annual stipend for three years to teacher in low-performing schools and mentor new teachers

Take One! • “Sample” the National Board Certification process with the option of retaining your score should you choose to subsequently seek certification. • If you are unable to complete your entry by the submission deadline, you have the option to defer, which will extend your submission deadline and score release date by one year.
