Aims of the Evening • To find out what the children at Hillside are using the internet for • To discuss the benefits & risks associated with websites and apps that are currently popular with children • To know what support there is available for you as a parent and to discuss ways you can help

  3. How are our pupils accessing the internet?

  4. What are the benefits? • Mobile phones – safety • A wide range of Information • Educational online games • Communication with others

  5. What are the risks? Contact • Contact with unknown people • People may not be who they say they are online Content • Age appropriate? • Illegal? Conduct • Harm from interactions from others • Cyberbullying

  6. E-Safety Survey Results 99% of KS2 children who completed the survey said that they use the internet regularly at home.

  7. What are the children at Hillside using the internet for? Online Games • Club penguin • Moshi monsters • X box live • Lego • Monster high • Friv Social Networking • Msn messenger • Skype • Twitter • Facebook • Email Also children use the internet to find out information or download images.

  8. Online Games • No interaction with others • Do not ask for personal details • Age appropriate (Friv does have some violent games)

  12. Positive Survey Results  Q: Do your parents know what you do online? Majority of pupils said Yes. Q: Have you ever come across information on a website that made you feel uncomfortable? If yes, what did you do? The 6 children that answered yes to this question wrote comments such as ‘I told my mum’ or ‘I clicked off of it because it was scary.’

  13. How do we ensure the pupils are safe online at school? • Children are aware of the school’s E-Safety Policy • E-Safety is embedded into the ICT curriculum • Teachers always remind pupils of safe online behaviour • Safer Internet Day • E-Safety assembly by pupils from Emmanuel Middle School

  14. How can you ensure your children are safe online at home? • Familiarise yourself with the websites and games your child is using • Talk about ‘safe online behaviour’ as a family • Make sure that you know what websites and games your child is using • Make sure that they are using the internet when you are around • Remind older siblings that the games or websites that they use may not be suitable for younger siblings

  15. Think about how you guide your family in the real world and use the same values and principles in the digital world.
