Contemporary Leadership • Transactional/Generic • Distributed • Cultural • Māori • Transformational
Transactional • Transactional leadership is concerned with leading the management and structural organisation of schools. Inherent to this generic model is the belief that knowledge and skills required to run any type of organisation can be transferred and exercised across any organisations (Whitley, 1989). • Western • Vertical • Positional • Hierarchichal • Heroic • Masculine • Task orientated • Managerial
Distributed • Timperley (2005) emphasises that within a distributed approach the division of tasks are stretched out over different roles. It is important to recognise the capabilities and expertise that are found within and across organisations (Leithwood & Riehl, 2003). Distributed leadership is characterised as a form of collective leadership in which teachers can share expertise by working together (Harris, 2004). • Horizontal • Collective • Non western knowledges recognised • Delegation and distribution very different
