Literature Review • Programs in May & Teacher Expectations (Carter, Ditchman, Ye, Trainor, Swedeen & Owens, 2010) • DO-IT Careers: work exposure overload (Burgstahler, 2001) • Super Senior Project: high school element/job shadowing & 5th year element/OJT (Estrada-Hern’ndez, Wadsworth, Nietupski, Warth & Winslow, 2008) • TCE: employment-first philosophy – 72% success (Rogers, Lavin, Tran, Gantenbein & Sharpe, 2008)

  4. Literature Review • BUT… no sign of assessments • 2/3 of employers use pre-employment assessment tools (Healy & Handler, 2010) • Only increasing (Hart & Shelton, 2007)

Results • Pre-Employment Assessment = small effect • Pre-Employment Questionnaire = large effect • 3 students (C, E & F) • C: OHI, African-American, Female • Same on assessment; increase questionnaire • E: ED, African-American, Male • Decreased on both • F: LD, Hispanic, Female • Increased both

  11. Discussion • What are they really assessing? • Increased assessment use; decreased evaluation • Students need our help • Future Research: • Let’s hear from the professionals (if possible) • How does self-determination factor in? • Implementation in the classroom • Fight fire with fire
