Design & Development of an Advanced Depth Sounder for Measuring Ice Thickness Background Limitations of NG-CORDS • 1991: NASA initiated a program for assessing the mass balance of the ice sheet • 1993: KU Radar Depth Sounder added to the instrument suite • 1996: Next Generation-COherent Radar Depth Sounder (NG-CORDS ) • 1998: Faster Digital System • 1998-2002: 90% success rate in field experiments • Problem measuring thickness over outlet glaciers and transition zones • Surface clutter & echoes mask weak returns • Loss of internal layering due to sensitivity time control Solutions • Reduce range side lobes • Have two different gain channels Advanced Depth Sounder Advanced Depth Sounder (ADS) Digital System & Radar System • ADS – Enhanced version of NG-CORDS • Digital System contains Waveform Generator, Data Acquisition System • Radar System contains Transmitter & Dual Channel Receiver • Compact in size • TX waveform is weighted • Range side lobes are around 35 dB • Testing in progress 051403
