  1. Welcome to Kindergarten Mrs. Nettles Mrs. Slate Ms. Flores Mrs. Hayes

  2. BACKPACKS *Your child must bring his/her backpack to school every day even ½ days. The backpack needs to be a full sized regular backpack without wheels. This allows children to keep all of their belongings (jackets, sweaters, lunch kits, etc.) in one place and these items are less likely to get lost. Please do not trade out backpacks. *We have attached how your child is getting home onto the backpack. Please do not take this information off.

  3. FOLDERS HOME FOLDER. All completed work, information from the office, notes from us, etc. will be in this folder. It is very important that you look over the material sent home each day. Please remove all papers from the folder daily and return only papers that indicate they are to be signed and returned. We check the folders each morning. If you have any information you want us to see, please put it in the folder. WE DO NOT CHECK BACKPACKS so please be sure your note is in your child’s home folder. If it is not in the folder, we probably will not see it.

  4. READING FOLDER/BAG. This folder is used to hold your child's books as well as record your nightly reading with your child. There will be an information sheet in the reading folder/bag when we send it home. The expectation for the reading log is that you or your child must read for 15 minutes daily. Please complete the reading log with that information. If a book is sent home in the reading bag or folder, that is the book that must be read. Your child has worked on this book in class and has been taught the reading strategies. Reading the book every night will increase your child’s fluency as well as recognizing sight words.

  6. DISCIPLINE We believe the kindergarten environment should be fun, safe and secure for all students. We encourage children to develop self-control by helping them make correct choices regarding their behavior. We must keep in mind that the classroom is a learning environment and we cannot allow any child’s behavior to interfere with another child’s learning. The orangeconduct book is on the left side of the folder. Please initial each square daily. Do not remove the orange conduct book from the folder. If your child has a serious problem or a recurring behavior problem, we will contact you and discuss solutions. Please communicate any concerns you have to us. We need to work together to make kindergarten a positive experience for all the children.

  7. TRANSPORTATION If there is a change in how your child is to leave school, please put a note in your child’s folder. If any emergency arises during the day, you can contact the office at 281-604-4600 and leave a message for us no later than 2:00. If you need bus transportation or have any bus transportation questions, you may call 281-604-7717.

  8. PARENT CONFERENCES We will be having formal conferences in October and again in February. However, if you have any questions or concerns at any time please call for a conference. We will be glad to talk to you on the phone or meet with you personally. We always want to work together for whatever is best for the child. It is extremely important that we keep the lines of communication open. Our conference time is Monday- Thursdayat 8:45 – 9:30. Mrs. Nettles 281-604-4606 Mrs.Hayes 281-604-4605 Mrs. Slate 281-604-4604 Ms. Flores 281-604-4608

  9. ATTENDANCE Your child’s attendance at school directly affects his/her progress. It is very important that your child be at school on time every day. Your child needs to be in the classroom when the tardy bell rings at 7:50. Your attitude about the importance of coming to school will affect how your child feels about school and will set a pattern for later school years. However, if your child is sick, please be considerate of the other children and do not send him/her to school. Students must be clear of a fever for 24 hours before returning to school. If your child misses school for any reason, you must send a written excuse the day your child returns. We are required to keep these notes on file. If your child is absent for 3 or more days, he/she must have a doctor’s note to have an excused absence. Excessive tardiness and/or absences are automatically turned in to the truant officer.

  10. Students who enter into the building late, are in the hallway/cafeteria area after the tardy bell rings, or are late to their first class at the beginning of each school day will be signed in on the “tardy sweep” folder and will receive the following consequences: • 1st Offense – Verbal or written warning • 2nd Offense – Parent Contact • 3rd Offense – Warning Letter • 4th Offense – Recess/Lunch Detention • 5th Offense - Mandatory Parent Conference (Students must be accompanied to school the next morning by a parent/guardian to meet with the appropriate administrator regarding excessive tardies. Failure of parents to comply with this provision will result in disciplinary consequences for the student such as loss of privileges, detentions, or In-School Suspension.) • 6th Offense – Saturday School for students and parents • 7th Offense (or failure to attend Saturday School) – The consequences will be determined by administration. The consequences may include but are not limited to ISS time, Saturday School for students and parents and/or other appropriate disciplinary action, including referral to the District Discipline Committee. Note: The District regrets the possibility of imposing disciplinary consequences on elementary students; however, these consequences are intended to encourage parent involvement and compliance with district tardy policies.

  11. PARENT VOLUNTEERS Parent volunteers must complete the parent volunteer form on the lpisd.org website. This is required for any adult wishing to attend field trips. Please complete this form as early as possible as it takes several days to process. We have many special occasions and projects throughout the year for which we would like parent help. All volunteer work is greatly appreciated. PTO will be sending application forms for room parents and volunteers.

  12. LUNCH A menu for cafeteria breakfasts and lunches has beenprovided. Breakfast costs $1.00. It is served from 7:15-7:40. Please make sure that your child is here by 7:30 if they are eating breakfast. Please learn the lunch ID number. Lunches cost $1.85. If your child will be buying lunch on a regular basis, please use the lunch account system in the cafeteria. Your child is assigned an account number and you can put money into that account. We send a reminder home when your child is out of money. We have found this system very helpful in preventing children from losing money when they try to bring it everyday. If your child brings a lunch kit, please write his/her name on the lunch kit to avoid confusion. You are welcome to eat with your child at a special guest table during your child’s lunch period. However, we ask all kindergarten parents to wait until after Labor Day to visit your child for lunch. Most children need some time to get used to the routine of school. We appreciate your cooperation with this matter.

  13. MONEY On occasion, it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. Always send money in a sealed envelope or sandwich bag and place in the pocket of their conduct folder with the following information included: Your child’s first and last name The amount of money The purpose of the money (book order, lunch, snack, pictures, etc...) Teacher’s name

  14. DROP OFF/PICK UP All car riders will be dropped off and picked up in the front of the school by the office. When picking your child from the school, please place your child’s name placard on the right side of your dashboard allowing the traffic to flow quickly and smoothly. Please wait patiently in your car; we will bring the child to you. Once your child is loaded, do not pull out of line, due to the safety of our children. A staff member will motion when it is safe to pull forward.

  15. BIRTHDAYS Birthdays are special occasions for young children. If your child wishes, he or she may bring cookies for the class on their birthday. There will be no birthday parties given at school. Please contact your teacher in advance, so we can give you an exact number of children in the class and inform you if there is something going on that day that may not allow us time for cookies. Cookies are given the last part of the school day. If you are wanting to send birthday invitations, there must be an invite for every student in the class.

  16. DRESS CODE Your child must follow the LPISD dress code every day. Parents, please be aware that your child will grow rapidly through the year and will possibly outgrow their clothes. Students need to wear tennis shoes for PE activities throughout the week. In addition, we encourage girls to wear shorts underneath their dress or skirt. *Your child’s shirt must have a collar *Socks and tennis shoes everyday *Every day is a Bayshore Bobcat spirit t-shirts
