JTC 1 – SG-EEDC

ISO/IEC JTC1 SWG-Smart.Grid is a special working group focused on identifying market requirements and standardization gaps for Smart Grid technology. The organization aims to promote interoperability and international standardization coordination. This includes addressing data centers' role as an important load on smart grids and their energy management. The group shares pertinent results with the EEDC.

  1. JTC 1 – SG-EEDC ISO/IEC JTC1- Special Working Group on Smart Grid (SWG-Smart Grid) Prepared by: Gerry Lane Country: USA

  2. ISO/IEC JTC1 Special Working Group on Smart Grid (SWG-Smart Grid) • Name of organisation and associated bodies • JTC 1 SWG-Smart Grid • Description of what this organisation is addressing • JTC 1 established a Special Working Group on Smart Grid (SWG‐Smart Grid) to identify market requirements and standardization gaps for Smart Grid with particular attention to standards supporting the interoperability of Smart Grid technology and needed international standardization coordination, especially with the IEC SMB Strategic Group 3 on Smart Grid. • Who are the consumers • Initial consumers are the various SDOs, consortia, and government agencies followed by bulk generation facilities, local production capabilities, building automation, smart homes, power grid transmission and distribution facilities, metering manufacturers, with an overlay of communication and security information suppliers and collection capabilities.

  4. ISO/IEC JTC1 Special Working Group on Smart Grid (SWG-Smart Grid) • Taxonomy, terms, definitions and metrics used and introduced. • See IEC Smart Grid Standardization Roadmap: http://www.iec.ch/zone/smartgrid/pdf/sg3_roadmap.pdf • See NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards: http://www.nist.gov/public_affairs/releases/upload/smartgrid_interoperability_final.pdf • Standards (certification) being proposed, developed or suggested. Current Standards. • JTC 1 SWG-Smart Grid is using the IEC SG 3 material as a starting point and will develop comments/recommendations to it based on the JTC 1 perspective. • Related IEC Standards list: http://www.iec.ch/zone/smartgrid/grid_relevanttcs.htm • NIST Standards Survey is Section 4 of the NIST Framework and Roadmap: http://www.nist.gov/public_affairs/releases/upload/smartgrid_interoperability_final.pdf

  5. ISO/IEC JTC1 Special Working Group on Smart Grid (SWG-Smart Grid) • How does this relate to the scope of EEDC • JTC 1 SWG-Smart Grid recognize that data centers are both an important load on smart grids, and that JTC 1 has a particular interest in data centers from an energy management point of view. • JTC 1 SWG-Smart Grid is also in the process of creating an inventory of work potentially related to smart grids. They will share pertinent results with EEDC. Potential Intersection with EEDC
