  2. Early Years • Dick Dietz was born on Thursday September 18, 1941, in Crawfordsville, Indiana. • Dietz attended Greenville High from 1956 to 1960, where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball.

  3. High School Highlights • Dietz was named the first sophomore ever to the S.C. All-star football team. • Also, he was selected to the All Conference Baseball team all 4 years he played. He also performed well academically in the classroom.

  4. A Night to Remember • On graduation night in 1960, Dick Dietz signed a contract for $60,000 with the San Francisco Giants. • He played for 12 years in the Giants organization, from 1960-1972.

  5. Catching a Break • In 1963, after three years of playing for the Giants, Dietz was renewed his contract for $90,000. • During the same year Dietz and a fellow catcher Ray Hundley were nicknamed “The Gold Dust Twins”.

  6. Major League Debut • On June 18, 1966 Dietz was called up from the minors to play in a major league game. • In his first game Dietz hit a towering 410 ft. home run off of hall of fame pitcher and Dodger great Sandy Koufax. • Playing in on only 57 games that season, Dietz was named Topps all-star rookie catcher.

  7. An All-Star player in 1970 • In 1970, Dietz finally played on a daily basis in the major leagues. In this year, he excelled in every offensive category, including a .300 batting average, 22 home runs, and 107 RBI’s. • Dietz, a successful catcher both offensively and defensively, was selected to the National League All-Star Team. • In the All-Star game, the National League was down in the ninth inning (4-1), but Dietz hit a home run giving the N.L. momentum and helping them to defeat the American League in extra innings.

  8. Traded • After 12 seasons with the Giants, the L.A. Dodgers acquired Dietz in 1972. In his first start as a Dodger, he broke his finger, and the following year (1973) Dietz was traded to the Atlanta Braves, where he ended his baseball career in 1974.

On Top of the Leader Board Dietz holds many records within the San Francisco organization… • Record for most RBI’s for a catcher in a season. • Second in on base percentage with a .395. • Just below baseball great Willie Mays for doubles in a season. • Fifth in slugging percentage. • Most walks for a catcher, with 267.

Simulated Interview • What was your initial reaction when you realized that you would be going to play major league baseball straight out of high school? “I was overwhelmed with joy, I knew that I was a good baseball player, but to play in the major leagues had been a dream of mine since I was a young boy”. • While at Greenville High what was your favorite sport to play? “Although I played major league baseball, my favorite sport was football”. • In the 1970 all-star game, how did you feel when you hit the game tying home run for the National League? “ I was actually very focused on doing well in the game, because I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be back. So, I was filled with excitement when I hit the home run for the National League”. • What record are you most proud of that you have with the Giant’s organization? “I would have to say that I am most proud of being the catcher with the most walks for the Giants throughout their history, because it shows that pitchers were afriad to pitch to me.

  11. Currently, Richard Allen Dietz is living on the coast of South Carolina, with his wife and three children. As a result of his rise to fame, Dietz will forever be remembered as a hero for many students at Greenville High School. He serves as an inspiration to the young people of Greenville High today. His success gives students a belief that they to can become something great.
