  6. The Relational Pathway • Who you have something in common with! • The Apostle Peter: came to Jesus with others, part of Jesus’ inner circle, the defining relationships of his life of all took place in a relational context.

  7. The Relational Pathway • Characteristic: Spiritual growth comes most naturally when you’re involved in significant relationships. • Strength: you have an ability to get people involved with furthering God’s kingdom! • Caution: you can grow dependent on others and become a spiritual chameleon. • Ways to stretch: study the scriptures for yourself so you are grounded in God’s Word rather than in other people’s opinions.

  9. The Intellectual Pathway • Who you have something in common with! • The Apostle Paul: one of the great Jewish scholars, went to the synagogues to pour over the Scriptures, the road to his heart led through his head.

The Intellectual Pathway • Characteristic: you have little patience for emotional expressions of faith. • Strength: you often befriend people who are like minded with whom you can learn. • Caution: don’t confuse being smart with being spiritually mature. • Ways to stretch: your learning needs to lead to worship otherwise it can get dangerous.

The Serving Pathway • Characteristic: God’s presence seems most tangible to you when you are helping others. • Strength: it is important that you are plugged into the congregation so you know when and where there are opportunities to serve. • Caution: be careful not to resent other people who don’t serve as much as you do. • Ways to stretch: learn how to receive love even when you feel like you are not being productive.

  15. The Contemplative Pathway • Who you have something in common with! • Mary (Martha’s sister): sat at Jesus’ feet while Martha was busy getting dinner ready.

The Contemplative Pathway • Characteristic: you have a large capacity for prayer. • Strength: act on what you hear from God in silence. • Caution: resist the temptation to consider your times of private prayer and solitude as less important than the more public acts of ministry performed by others. • Ways to stretch: connect with those who have an activist pathway.

The Activist Pathway • Characteristic: you have a single-minded zeal and a very strong sense of vision. • Strength: it is important for you to find a group of people to invest in and work with to accomplish big goals! • Caution: guard against going to long without pausing to reflect on what you are doing. • Ways to stretch: cultivate a reflective discipline like journaling.

  21. The Worship Pathway • Who you have something in common with! • King David: he danced before the Lord with all his heart, and expressed his love for God through music and praise.

The Worship Pathway • Characteristic: in difficult periods of life, worship is one of the most healing activities you engage in. • Strength: It may be helpful for you to find out about other worship traditions and incorporate them into your worship. • Caution: guard against an experience-based spirituality that always has you looking for your next worship “high” • Ways to stretch: remain committed to your church even when worship isn’t all you would like it to be.

  24. The Creation Pathway • Who you have something in common with! • Jesus: he was especially drawn to nature, often brought others with him to the lake or mountains to be with the Father.

The Creation Pathway • Characteristic: being outdoors replenishes you, it moves your heart, stirs your soul, and strengthens your faith. • Strength: it is easy for your to find places outside to spend quality time with God. • Caution: guard against the temptation to sometimes avoid church because you think, “I can worship God in nature on my own.” • Ways to stretch: take scriptures with you into nature, and meditate on God’s Word as you enjoy his creation.
