  1. What is Cyber Bullying? • Cyberbullying is any cyber-communication or publication posted or sent by a minor online by : • instant messenger • e-mail, website • diary site • online profile • interactive game • handheld device • cell phone or • other interactive device that is intended to frighten, embarrass, harass or otherwise target another minor.

  2. Common Forms of Cyber Bullying • Harassment • Repeatedly sending offensive, rude, and insulting messages • Denigration • Distributing information about another that is derogatory and untrue through posting it on a Web page, sending it to others through email or instant messaging, or posting or sending digitally altered photos of someone • Flaming • Online "fighting" using electronic messages with angry, vulgar language.

Impersonation • Breaking into an email or social networking account and using that person's online identity to send or post vicious or embarrassing material to/about others. • Outing and Trickery • Sharing someone's secrets or embarrassing information, or tricking someone into revealing secrets or embarrassing information and forwarding it to others • Cyber Stalking • Repeatedly sending messages that include threats of harm or are highly intimidating, or engaging in other online activities that make a person afraid for his or her safety (depending on the content of the message, it may be illegal).

What Can Be Done About Cyberbullying? • There are many things that can be done to combat cyberbullying. • The most important thing a victim of cyberbullying can do is : • Not respond to the bully • Do not play in to the bully's games. • Do not answer emails, • Do not respond to posts, • Do not engage in a chat room exchange, • Do not copy what the bully is doing. • Ignore the bullying • Get help from parents and teachers. • While ignoring the bully be sure to save the evidence so that school officials, Internet providers and even the police can properly deal with the bully. Cyberbullying may give bullies anonymity but it always leaves evidence.

  8. CYBER BULLYING SOLUTIONS Youth solutions – If being cyber bullied: 1. Do not respond/engage to the abuse. No back and forth. 2. Talk to someone about it. Don’t keep it to yourself. Ignoring bullying only leads to its escalation. 3. Keep records/print off messages if possible, to help identify bully. 4. If necessary get a new number, account, give it out one person at a time and keep a diary daily to record any abuse, your tormenter may be closer than you think. 5. Take a break – unplug Parent Solutions – If your child is being cyber bullied: • Make this topic a talk able subject • Place and keep the computer in an open, common space • Inform Internet Service Provider (ISP) or cell phone service provider of abuse. • Do not erase messages; keep for evidence. • Software help – McAfee Parental Controls filter both IM and Chat Rooms. Tracker programs.

  9. School Solutions : 1. Amend anti-bullying policies to include text messaging, cell phone use, and online bullying. 2. Make a commitment to educate teachers, students, and parents about cyber bullying. 3. Make sure parents know whom to contact at the school if there is a problem. 4. Never allow a known incident of bullying to pass unchallenged and not dealt with.

  10. Business Solutions : 1. Need to become educated and made aware of how their products may/are being used. 2. Encourage them to advertise responsibly 3. Help in shutting certain sites, when appropriate to do so. Government Solutions : 1. Passing of legislation to encourage, empower school districts to take bullying seriously. 2. Funding of anti-bullying efforts. 3. National anti-bullying hotline

  11. Conclusion • Cyberbullying is a growing issue in schools. Students have been in fights, brought guns to school, and even committed suicide because of being cyberbullied. • This is an issue which is a growing problem and must be addressed. It is serious. By helping students research the issues around cyberbullying, it raises awareness for both students and staff.
