  1. Unit 3C Lesson 1 Objective: to begin research on a person with special needs.

  2. Introduction • You need to write a report on how a person with special needs uses ICT. • You will be researching a person named Kevin. Read Kevin’s Story here.

  3. While Researching • What you are basically looking for is how Kevin uses ICT in his life. You will need to talk about a minimum of three aspects of his life. Examples: • Social • Personal • Professional

Further Research Tips • For each aspect of his like you will also have to talk about ICT three different categories of ICT as well. • The different categories of ICT are: • Internet: e-mail, www, chat rooms • Internet Technologies: modem, ISDN, ASDL, Broadband • Communication: mobile phone, video phone, video conferencing, information points • Entertainment: games console, MP3 Player, digital TV, media station • Control and Monitoring: burglar alarm, CCTV, GPS, central heating system • Mobile: laptop. PDA, wi-fi • Data Capture: digital camera, voice recorder, scanner, CCTV • Access: touch screen, switch, concept remote controls, hearing aid, keyboard • PC Technology: software, hardware • Storage Media: DVD, Minidisk • Financial Transactions: ATM, EPOS • Reprographics: photocopier, microfiche

  5. Researching the Technology • You will also have to give explanations of how the technologies which Kevin uses work. • You don’t have to give detailed explanations of the technology but make sure you explain, specifically, how they meet his special needs.

  6. Also Take Into Account • You need to evaluate how well the ICT works for Kevin. • This means you have to say how well or poorly it works. • You may boost your marks by researching and noting alternative technologies that could be used.

Goals for the Day • By the end of the day you should have researched and recorded the technology which Kevin uses in three of the areas of his life. • Remember to try to include three categories of ICT for each aspect of his life. • Remember the deadline for this is September 17. (Even if we don’t have class on that day.) • Homework- Read the exemplar material from the Edexcel website. You are looking at Jessica and Lucy exemplar 1 and 2. Scroll down to find the material.
