Use these facts to solve related multiplication problem and compute related problems. • Practice Problems

Lattice Multiplication • Create an array. • Draw in diagonal lines (dotted – like lattice) • Put the first factor on top of the first row (above the top two boxes) • Put the next factor to the right of the right hand column. • Multiply each column by each row. • Write the products in each box. • The tens digits go above the dotted line, the ones digits go below it. • Add the numbers within the lattice to find the sum. • Each diagonal line represents the place values.

Use these facts to solve related multiplication problem and compute related problems. • Word problem explanation/examples • Students will create their own word problem with a picture for our bulletin board.

  8. Launch • Use the beach ball to get students thinking about their multiplication facts. • Split the class in half and have the students toss the ball to and from their team to warm up and remember their facts. • Discuss Undersea Adventure Bulletin Board • Do three examples then have the students work in pairs to do some also • Put Multiplication word problems on the board with pictures of the sea creatures • They can draw pictures to go on the bulletin board.

  9. Solving Word Problems • Read the problem carefully. • Identify the information you need to solve the problem. • Draw a picture or diagram if necessary. • Use keywords to decide which operations to use. • Show your work. • Check your answer.

  10. Word Problems 12 Students from the Salisbury Elementary School went to the beach on Saturday.  Each student went on 10 rides.  What was the total number of rides that the students went on? The bus ride to York Beach in Maine took 30 minutes.  If the bus went to the beach and back 2 days in a row, how many minutes were the students on the bus? On Tuesday, Jason found 12 crabs at Hampton Beach.  He found the same amount of crabs on Thursday and Friday.  How many crabs did he find all together? 

  11. A Day at the Beach Multiplication Word Problems If one starfish has 5 points on it, how many points would 11 starfish have? _________ Jasper the jellyfish has 5 legs. If 9 more jellyfish joined him, how many legs would there be in all? ________ This crab has 2 claws and 6 legs. How many claws would 8 crabs have? ________ How many legs? _________ Oliver the Octopus has 8 legs. How many legs would 7 octopus have? ________ This lobster has 2 claws and 8 legs. How many claws would 9 lobsters have? ________ How many legs? _________ If a beach ball has 5 colors on it, how many colors would12 balls have? ___________

  12. Mnemonic Songs Use the memory power of music to help learn basic mathematical processes. Here is an example of a Multiplication Rap that I created to help students remember their multiplication tables. It’s time to learn our multiplication facts If you follow along and step in my tracks You’ll understand how to multiply If you concentrate and really try Now you can do it wrong or you can do it right If you do it wrong, you’ll be here all night

Multiplication Tables Rap 1 x 1 = 1 Let’s go to the beach and have some fun 1 x 2 = 2 It sounds like something fun to do 1 x 3= 3 There’s no other place I’d rather be 1 x 4 = 4 Lot’s of creatures on the ocean floor 1 x 5 = 5 Walk in the water or take a dive 1 x 6 = 6 Can you do any diving tricks? 1 x 7 = 7 The beach is like a piece of heaven 1 x 8 = 8 Fried dough from the beach is always great 1 x 9 = 9 If you use sunscreen you’ll be just fine 1 x 10 = 10 I hope we get to go again 1 x 11 = 11 Let’s build a sand castle up to heaven 1 x 12 = 12 You can swim all by yourself!

Use these facts to solve related multiplication problems and compute related problems • 4.N.12 - Add and subtract (up to five-digit numbers) and multiply (up to three digits by two digits) accurately and efficiently. • 4.N.14 - Demonstrate in the classroom an understanding of and the ability to use the conventional algorithms for addition and subtraction (up to five-digit numbers), and multiplication (up to three digits by two digits).
