  1. NFRC Research Proposal NFRC solar Non-Planar task group March 26, 2018 Charlie curcija & Michael Fischer, co-chairs

  2. Presentation Preview • Background • Current NFRC Landscape • NFRC Simulation • Draft RFP Status • Project Budget • NFRC Impacts and Benefits • Why This Matters • Questions

  3. Background • Non-Planar Products • Domed Skylights • Market Drivers • Daylighting • Comfort • Energy Efficiency • Prior NFRC Thermal Properties Research

  4. NFRC Landscape Today • No NFRC Simulation • Individual Product Testing • Market Barrier for New product Configurations and Sizes • Energy Code Compliance • Default Values • Punitive Energy Calculations

  5. DRAFT RFP Status • Draft RFP Ready for Task Group Review • Karen Bishop, Kellen Company, for the Plastic Glazing Coalition • Draft RFP Includes • Objective: The objectives of this research are to complete development of NFRC simulation methods for calculating solar‐optical performance of non-planar systems, implement the necessary thermal and solar optical methodology in NFRC energy rating software tools THERM and WINDOW, to validate the new simulation methodology and tools by measuring U‐factors and SHGC of a selection of non-planar systems, and to update NFRC 100 and 200 with the additional simulation options. • Background, Scope, Timeline and Deliverables, Budget

  6. Budget • Overall Project Estimate is $250-300k • Additional Staff and Volunteer Time • Other Revenue Support • Manufacturers • Trade Associations • Grants • Project Would Likely Extent Through 2-3 Budget Years • Timeline Target is NFRC 2022 Standards Edition

  7. NFRC Impacts and Benefits • Increased Product Offerings • NFRC Certification Program Growth • Potential NFRC Membership Growth • Expanded Presence in Non-Residential Applications

  8. Why Does This Matter? • Status Quo Fosters a Market Disadvantage • Barrier to Market • Testing Expense Limits Competition and Stifles Innovation • The Project Will Fulfill Prior NFRC Research Investment

  9. Questions and Discussion Thank you for your consideration
