  1. 802.11ax Timeline Date: 2014-05-12 Authors: Minho Cheong, NEWRACOM

  2. Abstract • This presentation gives set of issues on when will be an appropriate time for the 802.11ax ad-hoc groups start Minho Cheong, NEWRACOM

  3. 802.11ac Timeline • 2008.11: Task Group starts • 2008.11~2009.09 (1.0 year): Preparation for ad-hoc groups start • Functional requirements document • Evaluation methodology document (with simulation scenarios) • Channel modeling document • Usage model document • Selection procedure document • 2009.11: Ad-hoc Groups start • All the feature items for the spec. is discussed in each ad-hoc • All the jobs are done with the specification framework document Minho Cheong, NEWRACOM

  4. 802.11ac Ad-hoc Group Composition [1] TGac COEX PHY MAC MU-MIMO • OBSS Management • Multi-Channel • Non-contiguous channelization • MC MAC protocol • > 80MHz channel • Backwards compatibility • CCA • Channel access Fairness • Scanning and channel selection • Pilots • Data tones • Preamble • Enhanced MCS • Sounding • Higher Bandwidth modulation • Parsing and Interleaving • Coding, STBC • Spatial Mapping & Cyclic Delays • Power saving • Capability negotiations • Frame formats • Downlink MU-MIMO • Uplink MU-MIMO • MU-MIMO parameters (e.g. # of streams, # of clients) • Training protocols • ACK protocols • Reservation/polling protocols Minho Cheong, NEWRACOM

  5. 802.11ax Timeline (Expected) • 2014.05: Task Group starts • How long for preparation before ad-hoc groups start? • Functional requirements document • Remaining issues: absolute numbers for requirements definition may require more time because PAR only has relative numbers in it • Evaluation methodology document (with simulation scenarios) • Remaining issues: PHY/MAC/Integrated calibration process may require more time. (More sophisticated traffic models may be needed) • Channel modeling document • Almost done in the SG phase (minor modifications to be) • Usage model document • Already done in the SG phase • Selection procedure document: maybe no issue Minho Cheong, NEWRACOM

  6. 802.11ax Timeline (Expected) • We can speed-up compared to 802.11ac days • If reducing (from 1.0 year) to 0.5 year, • 2014.11: Ad-hoc Groups start (Expected) • All the feature items for the spec. is discussed in each ad-hoc • All the jobs are done with the specification framework document • How to run ad-hoc groups will be determined by a separate official document (maybe Selection Procedure document) Minho Cheong, NEWRACOM

  7. 802.11ax Ad-hoc Groups Composition (Example) TGax COEX PHY MAC Multi-User • All the OBSS/dense Wi-Fi/Coexistence related features • E. g.,) • OBSS Management • Backwards compatibility • Dynamic CCA • Channel access Fairness • Scanning and channel selection • All the PHY features • e.g.) • Pilots • Data tones • Preamble • Enhanced MCS • Sounding • Higher Bandwidth modulation • Parsing and Interleaving • Coding, STBC • Spatial Mapping & Cyclic Delays • All the MAC features • e.g.,) • Power saving • Capability negotiations • Frame formats • All the Multi-User related features • e.g.,) • DL/UL MU-MIMO • DL/UL OFDMA • MU-MIMO/OFDMA parameters (e.g. # of streams/channels, # of clients) • Training/ACK protocol • Reservation/polling protocols Slide 7 Minho Cheong, NEWRACOM Minho Cheong, NEWRACOM
