  2. Why did Athens and Sparta go to war? • Athens had the strongest sea force • Sparta had the strongest land force • After working together to defeat the Persians, both wanted to be the supreme power in Greece

  3. What was the Delian league? • Founded in 478 B.C • An alliance between Athens and other city-states • Members promised to protect each other from Persia and provide ships or money for defense

  4. What was the Peloponnesian League? • Formed in 500s B.C. • An alliance between Sparta and other city-states • They wanted to expand their power and receive protection

  5. What happened as a result of the Peloponnesian war? • After several battles Sparta defeated Athens • The democratic government of Athens was replaced by an oligarchy • Cities in all of Greece were destroyed • Governments fell and trade decreased
