  3. Trail Description • The scandal all started when eight members of the Chicago White Sox were bribed to throw the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. The eight men included the great "Shoeless" Joe Jackson; pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Claude "Lefty" Williams; infielders Buck Weaver, Arnold "Chick" Gandil, Fred McMullin, and Charles "Swede" Risberg; and outfielder Oscar "Happy" Felsch. One of the players Arnold Gandil persuaded gambler Joseph Sullivan that the fix could work and with the help from New York gangster Arnold Rothstein, he supplied the money through Abe Attell, a former featherweight boxing champion. The fix was a result of their club owner Charles Comiskey who all the team members resented the most. Comiskey had a reputation for under paying his players and the players were property of the team and no one else was allowed to sign them. On September 21 the team held a meeting in Arnold Gandil’s hotel room. However, things started to get complicated ,when another gambler “Sleepy” Bill Burns heard about a possible fix. Gandil, met with Cicotte and Burns, and announced that they would work a fix with Burns and Maharg for an upfront $100,000. Then on December 15 1919 Chicago sportswriter, published in New York World a story headlined “IS BIG LEAGUE BASEBALL BEING RUN FOR GAMBLERS, WITH BALLPLAYERS IN THE DEAL?” revealing the fix. On June 27, 1921, the case of State of Illinois vs Eddie Cicotte et al opened in the Chicago courtroom of Judge Hugo Friend. As the trail went on for days the jury finally made a decision. And the jury’s verdict was “not guilty.” Linder, Douglas (2010).
