  2. EARLY LIFE • HOUSTON WAS BORN ON MARCH 2,1793. • HOUSTON WAS BORN IN VIRGINA . • Houston had eight brothers and sisters, he was the fifth son and had three younger sisters .

  3. Early life • Family-Sam Houston came from a lineage of Scots who had settled in the Great Valley of Virginia in the early 1700s. His father, also named Samuel Houston, was a member of Morgan's Rifle Brigade during the Revolutionary War, and had a lifelong commitment to military affairs. • Born-Sam Houston was born March 2, 1793 near Lexington, Virginia. He was the fifth child and fifth son of the family, and was named after his father. In total there were 9 children--7 boys and 2 girls.

  5. Adulthood • While governor, Houston married Eliza Allen, a Southern belle half his age, on Jan. 22, 1829. • Sam Houston has one child and his name is Sam Jr.

  7. Role during the Texas revolution • Houston led his army on a zigzagging retreat eastward, pursued by Santa Anna. Near the river of San Jacinto, Houston decided to make his stand. the Texans justified their revolution on several wrongs they alleged had been done them: official religions repression, and an unstable government that failed to provide needs such as trial by jury.

  9. Final years • He was seventy years old at the time of his death on July 26th, 1863. He died at 6:15 pm. • Sam did of pneumonia in huntsville . • because he helped defeat Santa Anna to win the Texas independence.
