  1. Summary of EMC-DTC Meeting June 18, 2009

  2. DTC AOP 2010 • Tasks to be continued from 2009: • WRF-NMM + WPP community support (Jamie Wolff) • Reference configurations implementation (Jamie Wolff) • GSI community support (Ming Hu) • HWRF community support (ShaowuBao) • HMT-DTC: verification of precipitation forecast, ensemble prediction and verification (Ed Tollerud) • HWT-DTC: Evaluation of cloud-resolving model predictions (Tara Jensen) • NAM-GFS precipitation forecast comparison (Jamie Wolff) • Support Pre-BUFR and BUFR data tools to the community through DTC

  3. DTC AOP 2010 • Proposed New Tasks to be added: • NEMS software architecture: • Introducing NEMS to the community through organized NEMS workshop/meeting to be held in the fall of 2009. • Hire a DTC software engineer to work at EMC to work with EMC NEMS team and participate in the transition of WRF modeling system (including ARW and NMM) to the NEMS software framework. • Accelerate the WRF-ARW RR system NEMS conversion at GSD. • Ensemble forecast systems: • Perform verification of SREF forecasts • Perform Test and Evaluation of different ensemble techniques • HFIP Demo Project: • Perform Test and Evaluation of demo systems • Assist in assessing the potentials of demo systems for operational use

  4. Summary of GSI Discussion • EMC and DTC will maintain two synchronized GSI repositories: • Building off the model of GMAO-EMC collaboration • Frequent homogenization to keep the repositories in sync. • Need to determine how libraries will be handled • User support • 1 release and 1 tutorial per year – staggered • Helpdesk assistance request – channeled through John Derber • First GSI tutorial class to be offered in September 2010: • 3 day tutorial followed by 2 day workshop • EMC staff will participate as lecturers and instructors (who TBD) • DTC will be invited to participate in the JCSDA workshop • Maintain close coordination of NOAA and AFWA supported GSI tasks at JCSDA, DTC, and MMM.

  5. Summary of HWRF Discussion • HWRF tutorial will be held in February 2010: • 2 day workshop followed by 3 day tutorial • Naomi Surgi will contact Greg Holland on the planning of the HWRF tutorial • Transition of HWRF from WRF framework to NEMS framework: • Need to develop a detailed plan • Need to identify tasks and resources required • Work with AOML on the implementation of the third nest for HWRF • Collaboration between MMM, AOML, and DTC. • Participate in the HFIP Demo Project, which includes several modeling systems: HWRF, ARW, COAMPS, GFDL, FIN, … etc. • Support FSU on the multiple model ensemble project • Will implement the HWRF code management plan (as illustrated in the following slide).

  6. HWRF code management plan

  7. Ensemble Forecasting • Support of SREF to the community: • EMC’s WRF-based SREF system is being transitioned to the NEMS-based system. • DTC will work with EMC to make the NEMS-based SREF system (including NEMS-ARW, and NEMS-NMM) available to the community. • DTC will work with GSD to accelerate the conversion of ARW from WRF software framework to NEMS framework. • DTC will continue to work with HWT on cloud-resolving (e.g., 3 km) ensemble prediction, in the area of forecast verification and evaluation of ensemble techniques.

  8. Follow-up • DTC Management: • DTC will work with NCEP/NWS to establish executive committee, management board, and advisory board. • Bill Kuo will work with Don Berchoff on this. • DTC will prepare AOP2010 and budget for preliminary review by August 2009. • DTC will be invited to participate in the NCEP AOP 2010 process, to keep planning process in syn. • DTC-EMC collaboration: • Suggest having face-to-face meeting once every 3-4 months. • DTC staff will visit EMC twice a year. • Technical discussion through email and teleconference will be held as needed • Should establish point of contact for each collaborative effort (would also like to have “back-ups” POC). • Steve Lord and Bill Kuo will work to get this established.

  9. Mesoscale Ensemble Workshop • Will be held on 23-24 September 2009 at NCAR Mesa Laboratory, Boulder. • Representatives from EMC, SPC will be invited as program committee members. • Need a presentation from EMC on NCEP’s plan on global and mesoscale ensemble at the workshop. • SPC/HWT cloud-resolving ensemble effort will be highlighted at the workshop. • The workshop topics should cover: mesoscale prediction, cloud-scale prediction, hurricane prediction (HFIP), and multiple model ensemble (FSU). • David Bright will be invited to participate in the workshop.

  10. Visitor Exchange • Exchange of visitors: • DTC visitors at EMC: • GSI: HuiShao (funded by AFWA) should be continued • NEMS: New DTC software engineer (to be hired) • EMC visitors at DTC: • HWRF/HFIP: Naomi Surgi (NOAA) should be continued • GSI: Visitor protocol will be discussed and arranged • Operation to Research interaction: • EMC’s presence at DTC sends a strong message to the research community. • EMC’s presence is necessary to strengthen the interaction between EMC with the research community. • EMC and DTC will develop possible options for EMC staff to visit DTC with length ranging from one week to one year. • Steve Lord and Bill Kuo will develop these options

  11. Challenges • The presence of EMC at the WRF workshop • Suggest to encourage more EMC staff to participate in WRF workshop • Possible areas including: NAM, SREF, GSI, NEMS, … etc. • Introducing NEMS to the broader community • Invite NCAR/MMM to participate in NEMS for both WRF-ARW and the new NCAR global cloud-resolving model • NEMS workshop should be held in Boulder, in fall 2009. Topics include: • Feature comparison of NEMS and WRF framework. • Advantages of the NEMS software framework. • DTC-MMM partnership in community user support • Should avoid a separation of MMM and DTC user support for WRF-ARW and NEMS-NMM. • Should consider having EMC-DTC-MMM joint meeting on future community user support. • Steve Lord, Bill Lapenta, Bill Kuo will work to plan such meeting

  12. Challenges (continued) • Next-generation data assimilation system development: • Data assimilation system is a critical component that significantly affects the performance of EMC models. • Future choices includes: EnKF, 4D-Var, and hybrid • Need to develop specific plans for next-generation data assimilation system development. • Need to solicit community participation in this effort. • Need to define DTC’s role in this.
